Which Area Rug looks better?

I am currently in the process of updating my living room and I need help in deciding which of the 2 area rugs look better. Once that decision is made I will go on to select wall colour, pillows and curtains. Please help me.

OTT= over The TOP:) As it too busy.:)

Tks Mystic, I was thinking OTT meant "Out there" but couldn't figure out what the other T meant. LOL

Just go with a solid muted rug that compliments the chair and then bring pattern with cushions. The chair and sofa are fighting against one another as it is, so you don't have to bring in another bold item. I would change up sofa. Color and style is quite dated.

Skip the blue rugs. I wouldn't add another color. You've got the perfect color palette already in the painting over the sofa. Complementary greens play nicely off the red leather.

If you want to lessen the impact of the red, use warm neutrals like the greige Mark shows above. Notice that the wall color he chose tips the sofa more toward brown than red.

And I think your second rug, the one in Mark's rendering above, is about perfect. IMO, you can stop looking.

Green tones emphasize red tones. The greige looks really good.

Wow Mark that looks great. Yes I get what you are saying about the colourful rug. Love the picture you posted. With the updated picture, the rug as well as the wall Colour it gives it a serene look. Can u advise on where u got the pic from as well as colour of walls.
Joyallen thanks for your input. Yes it would be so easy to go out and buy new sofa but hard concept to accept when sofa is in good shape/condition. I am seriously looking at changing the chair.

The beauty of houzz is how you can get advice from great people who have a vision to find items that will update a room using existing furniture that could be viewed as outdated.

Groveraxle.... Yes thank you I think are right. My problem is I start to second guess everything (yes I drive myself as well as my husband crazy). He just tunes me out.

I am in the process of painting this room as well as my kitchen and sitting room, so once this room colours are decided I can then move forward with colour flow from there.

Once again I really appreciate everyone's input. Have a great day everyone.

    Very impressive photoshopping Mark!

Yes, Mark! Great job. Love the color you put on the walls. I really like the effect with that rug.
Tina, don't worry about a sofa that is "dated." When I was working in the design field, 1980s, I bought a hunter green sofa for my living room. I still have it and still love it, so I am working on updating the room without getting rid of my sofa (a challenge to be sure as hunter green has not been in fashion for these last 20+ years).
I think the room with the neutral walls and rug as Mark and others have shown you looks really nice with your sofa.
Even with a design background, I second guess the choices for my own house and drive myself crazy all the time. Never had that problem when working with a client. :-) Happens to all of us. Hope the houzzers are helping you through it.

The muted one is growing on me.

I would angle the printed chair towards the sofa and move the accent table to the other side of the chair in front of the window. The swatches on the left are the different pillow colors.

Thanks er612......Looks good, now I'm even more confused. Are the wall colours the same in each picture? I really like the vibrancy of this rug but I have another room that is directly across from this room (open concept) and I'm afraid that with this rug there will be no flow.

Each one has a different color though they're very similar. You definitely have to try the colors in your actual home because colors are never the same on your computer. Plus different lighting in different directions. Not sure if you're on a budget but I think your current curtains would work with this rug. I like this rug because it ties together the colors that are already in the space. If the adjoining rooms match now, they will definitely match with this rug.

I think I need to change the chair if I go with this bold rug. I think the zebra print fights the rug. I have attached a picture of the room that is open to this room as well a picture of the chair fabric. Not sure if it flows. My plan is to repaint both rooms (as well as my kitchen). The kitchen defiantly flows with these colours as I have a brick red colour on the walls that also need to be updated.

I like the first and more colorful rug better.

Tina, both rugs work. I think it depends on what kind of look you're going for. The colorful rug adds a lot of energy to the space; the muted one calms it down. Which direction do you prefer?

Yes Grover they both do. The chair does clash with the bolder rug so I would have to remove or replace that chair with a colour that works.
I really liked both yours and Mark's rendition as it gave the room a softer look. I could then keep that chair but I think down the road I would like to replace it with either a linen colour that you suggested or a light grey tone. I showed my husband yours and Mark's renditions and he really liked them which really surprised me because he likes the current wall colour. But he also thinks you have the same decor FOREVER. He also liked the fireplace white which is a shocker because a couple of years ago I suggested painting it white and he was totally against it.
Originally my plan was to change colour scheme to greyish/griege tones and I think the softer rug will allow me to do that.
Once again I thank you for your comments. I always love to hear your suggestions on the various dilemmas.

I prefer the first rug BECAUSE of the chair! If it were a bolder animal print - like broader stripes so more contrast - I'd go with the 2nd rug. With it being a smaller print, it blends to a grey and the pattern is barely noticeable.

If you decide on the 2nd rug, you will need to repaint your walls and change out your art. Between the reddish color of the sofa and warm beige, the rug looks insipid.

Columbia93....thank you for your input. I plan on painting the walls regardless as I have had that colour for 10 years so it is time to change them. I have a lot of mid to dark tones in my house and I feel that I need to lighten them up (a little). The rug is actually more grey and I think the lighter colour in the painting picks up the colour in the rug. Something that I thought about today is that I have a dog that sheds (and I mean sheds) and now I'm concerned that the darker rug will always show the fur.

I promise I'll stop after this...

Tks er612.Wow really brightens everything up. I actually have gold curtain in that room however I took them off because I removed a valance and I am changing the rod. Is the paint colour in the same tones that Grover posted earlier?

Same tones but I think mine are slightly lighter shades. You already have curtains?? Excellent! I'm all for using what you have. The gold will work perfectly and look completely different without a valance.

My preference is number 2. This rug doesn't fight with the print on the chair. You can still continue to shop for something in between the two styles as an option.

Just to clarify, my personal preference based on the rug alone is #2, although I do like a bit more color. So, since it is obvious that it is the rug you are leaning heavily toward, here's your room with a bit of a color change - to give you an idea of where you should go. I swapped out for white lamp shades - a must - and even colored up your painting & lamps (roughly) to make it less distracting. I cannot stress enough that pictures on a PC are not what they are in person so the name of the paint isn't that important, just the tone as it appears here!

Thank you everyone for your input....very much appreciated. So I was still unsure on which rug to choose, so I made an appointment with a colour consultation from a paint store. I e-mailed her both rugs (without furniture) and she really liked the bold rug. I then sent her e-mail with rugs and furniture and her response was the bold rug did not go well with the chair however she thought the grey/biege rug would work. So I thought this is rug I will have to work with. When she came over I had the bolder rug down and she said the pattern on the chair does not go with the rug, however she thought it was a nice rug because of all the colour options. When I rolled the grey rug out, she paused and said it was way too light, she said it did nothing for my room. In the back of my mind I always thought something was off with the lighter rug. At that point I didn't know what to do. She said the bolder rug would work really well if I changed the chair. I have now returned the lighter rug but II still have the bolder rug which will need to be returned within two weeks if not keeping.

My husband is not to keen on me purchasing another chair just because it doesn't to well with the rug. He things I'm nuts.....what does he know about decorating LOL. I thought of looking for a slip cover but I'm not too fond of them. So....................I guess I'm looking for a different rug. Maybe I need a plain solid? Not sure.

If anyone has some suggestion for a rug that would be great.

I think too much attention is being paid to the animal print chair. It is a neutral color with a small "stripe" so it isn't much of a contrast. I think where everyone is having a problem is that burgundy colored sofa and med/dark beige walls, as well as the warm art. Those are all very bold so everything will be compared to them. The first rug "fits" because it is also bold. The problem with it is it has an "African/indian" vibe, as does the chair. Unless you want to go that direction, you should probably only have 1 piece.

In the above color renderings, while the colors aren't true, you can see that changing the color of the walls and getting a more neutral painting drastically reduces the contrast and makes the animal chair, as well as the lighter rug, blend in much better. My preference was the third one because the taupe color helps to blend the maroon and blue/beige and it's darker than the first, which helps with the bold sofa. I think if you painted the walls with a med taupe and got a new, larger piece of artwork in cools or neutrals, you'd find everything fits better.

If, however, you still feel the lighter rug isn't enough (and I understand you have time constraint so might not be able to paint the walls first), I went on Overstock.com to see if there were rugs that straddled those 2 you have plus incorporated a tone to bring in the sofa. Understand that you personal style is difficult to determine as your current choices are so different! But, to start you off - these are all around 8x10 and run from $150 to somewhere in the $300. It's a good place to look around yourself!

Tks columbia93. I like the 1st and 3rd rug. The current colour on the walls is a Carmel colour and will definitely change, most likely to a griege colour. I am moving the picture to the front entrance and will look for a new picture for above the couch. The animal print chair was originally in our rec room however my husband wanted a recliner for the basement so I brought it upstairs. I can always move back downstairs. I wonder if a plain rug would work better maybe in a medium Gray tone.

I would go with a soft sisal rug in a natural "rope" color, and paint the walls in antique white. Sofa pillow should be in textures, including an animal print.

Tks beulahmarin. So a plain neutral color is what you think would work? I actually had a plain light beige rug and I was trying to bring in a pattern with a little colour this time. Honestly white walls scare me because my window is south facing and I think it would look really washed out.

Too many patterns in the same space. the second one will tame the patterns and allow them to stand out instead of conflict. Solid drapes in the same tone as the rug. Your main art piece should also play off of the drapes and lighter rug. The art should be bigger as well. Happy decorating.

As a matter of fact, a large mirror instead of art will take the space to an entire different dimension.

They're both nice on their own. But, I think the most important thing when choosing a rug style is whether it is cohesive with what you already own. The first one has a SouthWest look. The second is very traditional. Your furnishing seem more contemporary than traditional. Of the two the SouthWest look is more in line with the things in the room.

Tina - yes! You have enough color & pattern going on, and you need a background of neutral, which you can achieve from the antique white wall color, and the soft sisal rug. Then add color / pattern to the sofa with an animal print to play off the chair and the walls....smashing!

Key is the texture of the sisal rug....

I really like the second one it brightens the room and if you do a gray paint on the walls it would really brighten up thing, gray and burgundy go really great together. also the pattern in the gray rug is more muted and will not clash with other patterns brought in with pillows, art ect.

I like the second one the lighter of the two.

I like the second one too. It is lighter and I like it with the end table and cocktail table you are keeping; they are very light and romantic and lyrical with a lot of movement and I think the rug mimics those lines. I think the lighter rug would lighten the entire room with very changes; the sofas will probably look lighter too. Your fireplace wall really is nicely balanced to itself andthe room. Good choices!

#5 rug. Or #2, it has the red. The other is neutral.

Well I choose a rug. It is different from the 2 that I posted. The first rug had some nice colours however many people commented that it was too heavy and bossy and I was afraid that it being so bold that I would get tired of it. The second one was a little too silvery. The rug I ended up with is a little more grey than the second. I also painted the walls a griege colour and the fireplace a dark grey. I also painted the sitting room that is open to my living room the same griege colour with a dark accent wall. here are some pictures.

Tks Columbia. The 3 rooms are so bright now. I also painted the kitchen in the same griege so everything flows and the space has a feeling of calmness, if that makes sense. I am very happy with the outcome. I have updated the fireplace with some blue accents. Once again I appreciate everyone's input.
