Living room challenges

Hi all, can you give me some direction here. I'm really stuck.
I love each piece in the room individually but somehow I don't think they go together.
1- I think the chair is off white and the painting is Bright white.
Is this bothersome to anyone but me? ;)

2- definitely need a rug, but what kind and color. I had a cowhide here and though I loved it , it didn't mesh with the texture of the white chair.

3-need pillows for the sofa. I want it to look a little less retro and in think some larger pillows will help that.

4-curtains for the slider and windows? Dark? Light?

5-not too much I can't do about the bird cage. :) He has to stay.

6-don't mind my husband on The couch. He's not amused with all the furniture musical chairs I've been playing lately. :)

Any help or input is much appreciated. I'm getting frustrated. :(

Thanks!

As mentioned by libra overstock has some great rugs. I will post a few that you might like

if you are thinking a brass birdcage down the road

or if you want to stay with just back & white, maybe something wild

    or just be cool

I like mia's idea of turquoise or teal as accent color. How about another chair?

I think if you painted the walls darker the whites and ivories would look well. I like a mid tone warm gray, a carmel, or a grayed down blue or aqua. An off white rug or a rug with colors of the furniture and walls in a pattern would then tie it all together.

Do you like either of these rugs:

    hi jen,
i like the idea of painting the walls a pale grey - maybe a shade darker than your blinds.Id suggest you put a nice cementy grey and white geometric design wallpaper on your tv wall maybe with a hint of bright yellow.I also like your brass interest in the bird cage - till you replace it i suggest you spray paint it to the metallic tone and hang it from the ceiling and remove the table its perched on now..i agree that the grey would bring out the painting but i still feel that the whites of the chair and the painting wont blend in the way youd probably want them to..in that case you could also mount the painting on a dark grey and ivory (a shade of the chair )silk board and leave this particular wall white while the adjacent walls could be a pale grey and the tv wall could be clad in the wallpaper.. teal does look beautiful but it would make the room a bit dull considering youre painting the walls grey..i suggest you go a little eclectic here and add touches of bright yellow and fuschia pink via cushions and table accessories..would you mind considering a yellow rug in that case ? wooden blibds in shades of dark brown would look nice and complement the flooring..you could also add a nice floor lamp next to the sofa .. hope the ideas work.. have a great time redoing your space !

Jen, lots of help here. Not everyone is picking up on your monochromatic goal / vision. While you certainly could paint, I like the range of whites .. from creamy to plain to pale gray white at the window. You have a good eye - you can trust it. You might add a piece of art that used charcoal frame / backdrop for paper art that had many shades of white - have you ever seen pintrest diy paint chip art? You could do a rainbow of whites from gray white to warm white . if the eye sees that the range is deliberate . .it becomes artistic. Hang in there - this is a great space (and a cute fella). He may get annoyed, but he is proud when he has his friends over and they say what a nice place it is. . .

Great sofa. The painting behind gets lost in the wall. Agree you should paint the walls a color.

Here's an end table that's 32" tall by Gabby.

im guessing an area rug has been told to you. It will bring everything together.

Please do not try to paint the birdcage. If your bird chews (and I haven't met one yet who doesn't) He will chew off the paint rendering the paint job useless & may sicken the bird as well.

I did have this hide rug in the room; I'd moved it to the office when I started rearranging. ;) how does this work? If not, I'm still open to another rug. I do also still need another chair or bench for one more seating.

I have a nice live plant I can use to the right of the sofa to give some greenery and height. I think my biggest concern now is windows, whether I do curtains on each window and on the slider. I dont want it to look too formal.

Thanks so much for the feedback.

I love the bicycle rug that Libradesign suggested. Also her suggestion for flannel draperies. You have selected really wonderful furniture pieces. Can't wait to see this room finished.

Imo, other rugs suited better. At least two black/ivory rugs [transitional/global] echoed art. I think the hide takes your room in too many directions.

jen, have any of the suggestions struck a nerve yet? Do you want to go in a different direction? Anything that you kinda like, don't like or hate? It's ok you can tell us we won't bite.

Hi. Yes, "thanks" so much for all the comments and advice. I have made some progress I think

White walls I think will stay. Trying to keep it as light and bright as possible bc we share a wall with the villa next door so we only have windows on one side.

Hide rug? Not sure. I do love it but I can find someplace else in the house for it.

Need another option for seating, one mor chair.

Birdcage can't be painted, only option would be a new cage (a real brass cage is cost prohibitive;) ) I'll keep it for now, might a black one work better? I'd love to get an antique cage but it has to actually hold the bird and they aren't usually functional.

Someone suggested lighter curtains, I think that may work in trying to keep the room light. I may test out a pair before I put up rods, buy multiple pairs etc. I don't ind committing to custom made but probably would try store bought to use for an example first.

I grabbed this picture offline, super eclectic but I like how light it is. They have awhile sofa however.

And I've always liked this stool from Pottery Barn and would like to figure how I could work it.

Again, trying to only have things I love and hope that they can somehow go together. Not sure that always works. ;)

jen, I was glad to read what others say too, that though we like all the items, they don't go together in all cases.... which leads me to the cage. If it's sage green/ bronze? that to me went the least with the hide, sorry. Your photo shows a few saturated bright items. Do you want that too?

Hi, the cage is a light grey. The selection for cages is pretty slim; if black would work, I'll do that next time. They're relatively inexpensive so that's not a huge deal.
I think what I like about the pic is the airiness. I'm afraid my room will be too dark. I could use a few lamps too, I know that will help to supplement the ceiling lights.

Also check out manufacturers like Brownstone, Palacek, Bungalow 5 and Redford House for some interesting chair styles.

    Examples below.

I think your hide is better elsewhere - a tad small for this space and since it isn't spotted b/w but an ombre' . . perfect for a master bedroom I think. Love the white walls - think next chair wants to be fully upholstered - contrast to your existing armchair but also for comfort . . good to invest in it, and for that it needs to be a "man" chair - something that will fit you, but that he can claim as his own. Narrow your search then take him to sit in it as if he was test driving the comfort.

Ikea can be a great place to get drapery panels .. You might consider these on sale http://www.westelm.com/products/velvet-pole-pocket-curtain-dove-gray-t862/?pkey=cwindow-panels-curtains-shades%7C%7C&cm_src=window-panels-curtains-shades||NoFacet--NoFacet---- or in iron - http://www.westelm.com/products/velvet-pole-pocket-curtain-iron-t863/?pkey=cwindow-panels-curtains-shades%7C%7C&cm_src=window-panels-curtains-shades||NoFacet--NoFacet---- they have a winter white but I would go for contrast here . .

Buy double plus one extra panel - You can do a mix of storebought and custom for less . . these are only 48 wide - to look great, get enough panels that seamed side by side and closed, they would be between 1 1/2 and 2x width of glass - put the rod all the way to the right corner to draw them back to -

Your local tailor can make a roman shade out of one extra panel easily / for not too much - ask and if they don't do it they will know where to send you . . . hang it at the ceiling over the narrow window - have them seam the panels together and ask if they can sew a baton guide the top where you want to draw them - like you would find in a hotel - much easier to get them where you want them. .. here's one source http://www.curtain-tracks.com/blog/drapery-hardware-used-in-hotels/

Crate and Barrel / Room & Board both have great options with wide range of fabrics to select. The wood end table will be great in this space next to the fully upholstered chair . . repeat the wood element of the floor / console. http://www.crateandbarrel.com/furniture/chairs/1

    http://www.roomandboard.com/catalog/living/recliners-and-lounge-chairs

    for inspiration . . .

So I moved this chair in from the office. Thoughts? Not quite the color I was going for but its kind of the right height. I had a taller chair for the bedroom it was too huge. So this one seems better size wise. Of course now the room isn't neutral.

I like the color, and if you're fine, that's fine, but now the other chair is spindly [retro?] but the rug, better.... idk...

Love the pop of color! Now, just add pillows that color.

I liked the neutral luxe look you were going for. To really add to this room you should add more metallics like the little side table you liked. I like your rug but it just doesn't go with your modern b & w art. If you like the eclentic look but want to stay neutral I suggest:
    a jute rug
a few different style side tables
    cute sparkly/metallic pillows
    a coffee table tray
small scale patterned neutral modern long curtains
    something wood
Here was the lighter bedroom chair. But it's just too big. It's silver/grey.

I miss the rugs with graphic look/ all-over pattern - some really communicated with your art didn't they?....?

The light gray chair might work better next to the birdcage. I think if you switch the two chairs the balance might be better. Stick to your vision of neutrals, if that is what your heart wants. You have done a great job so far!

Put a small table by the chair to anchor it and give it more presence.

The painting in back of the sofa is great but lost on the wall. Is there a smaller wall in the dining area that you could move it to? A painting with some color would work much better behind the sofa.

WOW! So many great ideas here. I think you have settled on the idea of white walls and they look great. I don't think the painting is lost. It is such a statement piece, how could it be? You need to pick a RUG you love. Color block, off white shag, solid color….. get what you love. Then decide on what to do with the rest of the furnishings. The birdcage is wonderful, believe it or not. It adds the unexpected and whimsical. The thing I've learned is not to try and make your home a replica of some standard set by magazines. Be an individual and show YOUR OWN personality a bit. You can't be all that challenged. Look what you've accomplished so far!

what did you think of the metalic accents? this would also give some more personality to your room

i like the orange chair, but the two beige work well together. the rug seems too small.. might go good in the office with the orange chair..

I also think you should pull the couch forward and put a console behind it, then the chairs could flank around the tv area better, and the room would be more centered with a large rug.

the rug is going to be the thing that lets you finish this room.

I think I'm on the way. I rearranged the layout and feel good about it. I'm going to keep the orange chair as it is my favorite color.

The two blocks are my outside patio ottomans and just holding the place for two stools that i think will look good there. Material, color, I'm not sure of yet. I may try some wicker ones as someone suggested a jute rug would warm it up so maybe I can find some wicker/banana leaf ones.

I'm going to do white curtains with black rods and rings to keep it light (similar to pic).

I'd like to find a tree stump accent table for next to the white chair as a side table. Still going to get the pottery barn gold stool for somewhere. I have a spot in my room for it. If it won't work out here.

Will work on sofa pillows, not a ton, maybe just one large one and a smaller one. Will try to see if I can get a little color there.

I have an odd "dead" space by the chair and front door that I will need help with next. ;)

Thanks to all the advice, it really did help get me to see how it could look once I'm finished (of course it will never really be finished). ;) I'll try to take a pic also with some better lighting.
