Eric - I know nothing about the genus pitcairnia but could the plant be a puya? The flowers do look similar to puya mirabilis, although the leaves on your plant do look a bit wider and less like untidy grass as is the case with some of the smaller puya genus. Are the edges of the leaves smooth or spiny?
