Definitely update landscaping. New shutter and door color also

I am not sure I follow the idea of rythmic fashion of a planting beds also there is no garage attached to the house although a it may not be a bad idea to add one.

To jck910, Should I replace the door and shutters that are already there. What color I was thinking a something to enhance the roof color.

Remove the metal railings...maybe build a roof over the stoop....somehow incorporating the peak above the window....and add wooden railings. That would be so adorable. Paint the shutters black and the door ( I would get a new style) red.

Lots of good ideas. I like the black shutters with a light blue door. If you replace the door make sure it fits time period of house. Lots of doors today have leaded glass windows which

I'd want the porch to extend the full length of the house, extending the gable and using a shed roof for the rest of the porch roof. If you pay attention to the pitch of the shed roof and not let it drop below the ceiling of the room on the far right, you could even create the option to enlarge that room and add a second window beside the existing one for more light at a later date -- an addition even more worthwhile if you made the porch at least eight feet deep (everyone I know could use more space, especially more closet space).

If you create one large step (1' deep) just outside the door threshold and on the porch, you can have a higher porch roof which would be cooler in summer and if you made the step 5' wide, you'd have room for a pair of flower pots or small statues to frame the door and alert people on the porch to not stumble on the step.

All the shrubbery next to the house would need to be moved out, perhaps framing a new sidewalk that begins at a point just behind the car in the pic and forms arc around the existing tall shrub and curving toward the front door. Using same brick for the pillars to the front porch and to create or outline the new sidewalk and to create a slightly raised flower garden in front of the new porch could link the new landscaping to the new front of the house for curb appeal. There are a lot of different colors and textures of brick from which to choose so you'll want to choose the brick as you choose any new colors for the house.
