DandyLioness, image 2 shows a ladybug - a beneficial insect that preys upon soft scales. Image 3 may show such an insect. Image 1 shows a serious condition which may be a fungus. Check out this interesting LINK to see if it helps.

That is not a ladybug. It is about 1/4 the size and not red at all. And the browning of the leaves is being caused by the insects. It only appears where the leaves have them crawling all over. Look closely in image one to see the insects in question.

spider mites are much smaller than these guys... and no i haven't taken samples in. Not sure how to go about doing that.

It's very difficult to see detail in your images. So, if that's the closest we can get, it would be a good idea to take samples of critters and damage to your county's Extension Service office. Find that office here: Extension offices in CA

About ladybugs. They comes in more colors than red. However as I said earlier, I can't be certain of the critter's ID in 2nd image. Possibly a tortoise beetle?

And picture #1 may have some beneficial insects, too.

I've never seen anything that makes so many tiny dark dots. So I won't even guess.

It might help if you show us the plant overall as well as the pattern of the drying/browning on leaves.

Hi. It's probably too late to help, but I think it is a lady beetle and it's actually eating the powdery mildew on your plants. I have the same problem w/ my artichokes. I thought it was the beetles causing the problem, but decided to look into powdery mildew and found this article. It mentions that powdery mildew can be a problem for artichokes, causing yellowing and browning (check!) but there is one kind of lady beetle that eats it: Psyllobora. It's super tiny, brown and white, and looks a lot like the guys in your photo. Sadly, it took me days of googling and I found that nugget only hours after spraying...
