I put some media in the bottom of the pot, then spread the roots out like a fan on top, then added more media on top of the roots.

Forgot to mention that I used rooting hormone (thanks for the suggestion Kadie) diluted in water today to set everyone happily in their pots.

So I ended up over-potting two of the seedlings that day, had to pull them from their pots yesterday because the caudex has gone soft on them. The soil just couldn't dry in a reasonable amount of time. Lesson learned the hard way, I hope it isn't fatal. I am letting them dry out for the time being. They will be getting 4 inch pots if they survive this round.

Thanks for your words of encouragement, Rick and Marie. It looks as though the full seedling will pull through. The pruned seedling remains questionable at best.

Assuming I am able to replant one or both, should I soak the bottoms in rooting hormone before replanting? Or would it be best to just keep it dry and put it into dry media?

I usually let dry as you are then pot up into a slightly moist (just not bone dry) gritty mix and leave for a few days in filtered light, then water after 3-4 days.

Thanks I will try this Rick, this time putting them in a much smaller container. Just to note I have posted this tidbit so that others can hopefully learn from my mis-steps. I know that I have a ridiculous number of seedlings that are up and coming so if I do lose one it won't be the end of the world. Thanks again.
