A larger round accent table on the rug, slide the rug a little closer to the wall, not too close though, no chairs....a large floral arrangement on the table, or something tall you like. Then a collection of pictures on the wall behind, maybe of family or architectural designs, lay it out on the floor before hanging on the wall. I do like the Piano idea!!!

to create a warm and welcoming entrance, i always love to see: a seat (a spot to put on or remove shoes if need be), a flat surface (a spot to put things) and to hold a lamp (to add a warmer, more flattering, lower level of lighting at night) with a piece of art that speaks of your personal style. this is the first impression to your home, make it inviting. also, add a large piece of art or a photo gallery wall on the stairs behind. if you plan a gallery wall of photos....print all photos to B&W and all in the same size and frame in identical frames...then hang in a geometric grid. this will give the photos a subtle gallery effect that won't over power the entry area below. you have a lovely home....keep us posted! :)

A curio cabinet could work.

Perfect place for a "secretary" with a hutch with glass doors above and drawers below and a board that folds down or pulls out for a writing counter... or a unique desk that catches your fancy if you need the functionality of one.

I'd not put upholstered furniture there.
