carpet

I need carpet ideas for my bedroom. It's a small room with deep blue walls (Mysterious by Benjamin Moore). Furniture is white and one red piece. I want something contemporary. Also, is there a design I should stay away from that would make the room seem smaller?

Why not keep your carpet white or a pale beige/white. I have just laid a carpet through my home and while I wanted a white white the best I could get was a creamy beige shade but it is pale enough to go with any colours and enough of a contrast for white, in fact I love it now more than the white I originally wanted. The red will pop with it too. If your room is small, the deep blue walls would be tending to make it smaller so I would keep your carpet plain - a patterned carpet will busy up the room and make it look smaller.

Thanks, that answers my question about pattern, I figured it would be too much. I'll probably go with a beige, to break up the white bedding. I've never picked out carpet before so I feel lost when it comes to style. I want something modern..

I get a bit confused with terminology here at times - when you say carpet do you mean a fitted carpet or a rug?

My problem is Americans talk a different English to Aussies. I think the English refer to it as Fitted Carpet, we just call it carpet and I think Americans do too. This is a link to the one I just got

My one is "Leon" - second from the right hand end, but it looks much darker than it actually is. This is what is called a twist pile and is probably the best wearing you can get. It is lovely and soft underfoot and feels very luxurious and doesn't track when your walk on it or vacuum it. It does have some shading in it which is good for hiding marks and stains which you probably won't get in a bedroom anyway. As you can see from this carpet it is pure New Zealand wool, which is one of the best and hardiest wearing carpets you can buy. I had this brand previously and have only just replaced it after 45 years - although it should have been done 5 or 6 years ago. I have a feeling though wool carpet in the States is much more expensive than here and most people seem to have synthetic. You will see a lot of bad comments on here regarding carpet and I feel it is because of the fact that most people only know synthetic. All carpets require very regular vacuuming with a good quality cleaner. Good suction is very important to get any deep down grime and dirt out thoroughly. Synthetic carpet does develop a static electricity that will attract dirt and grime so regular vacuuming is even more important. As bedrooms are not high traffic areas though, I would say twice a week should be sufficient, maybe more with synthetic only regular use will tell. I usually give my carpets a shampoo annually using a foam cleaner that doesn't leave the carpet wet and any accidental stains in between I treat with a dry powder cleaner. A lot of carpet manufacturers make their own cleaners.

I've heard people complain of footprints showing on carpet from walking barefooted and body oils and grease rubbing off onto it. This could be so with a synthetic carpet but wool has a natural lanolin in it that protects the carpet from this sort of marking, in fact protects it from many stains.

What you have to investigate is how a carpet is rated. Once it used to be how many tufts to a square inch determined quality, the more tufts the better. Now here it is rated on weight. As you can see mine is a 48oz which is very middle of the road. Anything below 39 is getting a bit light on but some go up to 70 or 80oz which are super expensive and probably not really necessary unless you have nothing else to spend money on. Do your homework there, just visit retailers and question sales people till you get the right answers to make comparisons.

Something like what I have chosen is pretty timeless, a twist pile like this has been around at least 50 years to my knowledge. There are looped piles which are also good wearing, you can even get mixtures of loop and twist and there are Berbers which are lovely but a little harder and really not suited for a bedroom. Once you start really looking at them all you will get a feel for them and do I think over there, like here you can borrow samples to take home and check out in the room. Try to at least get a sample overnight, I was lucky to get mine for 3 days over a weekend, which was great as I was able to move it around all rooms and check it out in all lights.
