Here is arabella with a primrose:

Marlorena, I love your geum 'blazing sunset'! Geums are new to me. I just planted my first ones this year - 'flames of passion.' They 're very small now but I'm hoping they will do well for me. I am somewhat pessimistic about the success I will have in our hot climate, but I will keep my fingers crossed. If they survive the summer, Maybe they will be okay. But your lovely picture is making me think maybe I should have ordered 'blazing sunset' instead!

.thanks!... I do love this particular variety of Geum, its deep colour and long season... I have them in several places, moist and dry, and they grow well in both conditions... I hope your 'Flames of Passion' does well for you... not one I know of but the name in itself is rather tempting...

Too tired for IDs! Feel free to ask if you're wanting to know the name of a particular plant and I'll try to let you know!

catkin...lovely as ever....you garden must give you great pleasure... I can't quite make out the deep rich blue plant 6th photo down.... a Salvia? gorgeous colour.. I'd like to know the name please...

...I think I've just bought the Geranium in your first photo... a sanguineum 'striatum'...? I'm very pleased with it,...really stands out...

    Great job, Catkin!

Gorgeous photos, Catkin (as always!). I have to say I envy you for having plants with nary a whole chewed in them anywhere. I've never, ever seen a photo of yours that even hints at a bug problem. I'm constantly fighting grasshoppers and other plant destroyers here in Oklahoma. It gets so discouraging.

Thanks! Mar, it's Nepeta 'Walker's Low' taken in the evening sun--weird, huh? I love hardy Geraniums, too!
    Kez, we have slugs....!

..oh my goodness I must get one.... I saw it the other day too in a garden centre... thanks catkin..

Since folks are posting on both the combinations threads, here is the link to the other one.

that is gorgeous, vivian!! I want that hosta, but I wonder how it would go with more yellowy creamy variegated stuff... it'd probably look odd.

..I don't grow Hosta's myself, but I think they look quite nice with grasses of various hues.... here's a photo I took the other day in one of the garden's I visited, of a variegated variety... don't know the name and the planting is a bit sparse here, but I don't mind this...

Some recent pics from my garden. Click pic to enlarge.

    1. Allium schubertii with Alchemilla mollis

    2. Geranium 'Brookside' with Iris pseudoacorus 'Variegata'

    3. Hemerocallis liliosaphodelus with Ligustrum ovalifolium 'Aureum'

    4. Geranium psilostemon with Trollius chinensis 'Golden Queen' with in the background the bluish flowers of Nepeta kubanica

    Beautiful pictures!

I never know what to do with clematis, but this one found his own way. Not exactly subtle.

    Thanks!
The lovely Gillenia trifoliata with Hakonechloa 'All Gold' (?) Click for a larger view.

Junco, what are the short red and pink flowers next to the sculpture? I love that combo.

Delphinium, they are Dianthus Deltoides. My recollection is that the varieties are Zing Rose and Vampire. The flowers are tiny, but they bloom for a long period of time.

catkin: which pink geranium with fringed bleeding heart?

name of very skinny leaved pulmonaria?

delicate pinate (?)foliage to left of pix with shiny rogersia (if that's what it is)

Is that the pink profusion gillenia

(back up) foliage mingling with chamy

I reallly like the allium with alchemilla..Hadn't thought of it. Changes the perspective entirely

How are all these vignettes knitted together? That is my absolute downfall: I may have some lovely combos but I end of with blocks of unrelated combinations.

Clematis "Yukikomachi" holding on to the climbing rose:

    (Here is "Y" up close):

Such a beauty, love the subtle color. I'm kicking myself for not getting one from Garden Import, I've never seen it for sale in my neck of the woods, I'm afraid it's a snooze you loose for me :(.

This season it has finally come into its own ie much larger and much more floriferous.

'katob', very nice! Last season I was all excited about Gillenia trifoliata and i planted a couple. But I dont see any sign of either of them this year. I will have to admire yours ;).

Annette, by chance would your nearby "Phoenix" carry it?

Rouge I looked when I was over there, no luck :(. I did pick up a 'Sweet Summer Love' tho.
I'll have to add "Yukikomachi" to my wish list and keep my fingers crossed. I did come home with most of what I was looking for and a few I wasn't :).

Annette, you could ask for your one of favorite nurseries if they can order it for you, next year if not this one.

Marie, the Geranium is unknown and the Pulmonaria's 'Roy Davidson' (guessing).
Nandina domestica (new foliage) with wet Helleborus leaves.
I bought the Gillenia as a plain specimen.
With Chamaecyparis is Eupatorium cannabinum 'Plena' . One of my favorite plants! I'd grow it for the foliage if it never bloomed.

Marie, I find that the angle in which you take a photo helps immensely--frame it from all different directions and choose the shot that's most pleasing to your eye.

Garden Ho, beautiful pics! Love your use of color.

Rouge, all your photos are lovely--that Clematis has me swooning!

Junco, what is the little white Daisy with your orange Lily? So sweet and unassuming. I love white in the garden--keeps it fresh looking, IMO.

June Hosta alternating with "All Gold" Japanese Forest Grass (what you can't see are a couple of Epimediums that do show themselves earlier in the spring when all else in this strip is much smaller).

Rouge, that is one eye catching combination, color and texture, it has it all.
    Annette

    Nice foliage combo, rouge!

..oh I think that's fabulous too... I'm not a fan of Hosta's but that colour is electric... I note it's a sport of 'Halcyon'...

    last modified: 11 years ago

Ohh I agree...Beautiful colors with awesome texture!

    Here's one from today...

'GHo' those colors are soo vivid. (It appears to be a bit of an incline...is that the case?)

rouge - what is the Japanese maple in that picture above? That's what really grabbed my attention.

-Catkin, those green texture combos are inspiring. Sometimes subtlety speaks volumes! My Gillenia never has such red bracts! How neat. It does have nice fall color though...such a wonderful and underused plant.

-Doug, WOW. That Yukikomachi is fantastic. What a great shade of blue.

Also love your maple with hosta/hakone. Such a cool, serene scene...

Yes Rouge, just a bit lol. Here is a better pic.

It was fun to plant. It is doing surprisingly well, considering there is a thirsty maple about 4 feet away.

great combo, I just planted some Hosta June with All Gold, Hellebores, European Ginger, primrose, and a few other shade perennials. How long did the Hosta and Japanese grass take to grow and how large are they currently? thanks

These combo pics are gorgeous! The first pic is Royal Jubilee rose with Jackmanii clematis. Second pic is Lady of Shallot rose with Gaura and Lady's Mantle.

Lovely combos and great ideas, All.

Here is my combo. A red daylily with a yellow throat that some how likes the shade, Corydalis, persicaria Virginiana, hosta Antioch, yellow flowered small sedum and halcyon hostas. Oops forgot the potted fuschia.

Thank you, All. I too, love foliage--after all, you're stuck with it after/before things bloom! Above is Eryngium giganteum 'Miss Willmott's Ghost' with weeds on the left and a Bottlebrush (?) to the right.
No ID Peony resting on Cryptomeria japonica 'Elegans'
Maple tree(small), Myrrhis odorata (left) and Nandina domestica (shiny)
Lysimachia purpurea, Eryngium giganteum 'Miss Willmott's Ghost' and a little 'Hakuro Nishiki' to the right

No ID Daylily with Nepeta racemosa 'Walker's Low'
Mophead Hydrangea with Aruncus dioicus--shrubs are perennials, too!
Eryngium 'Big Blue' is it? w/No ID Conifer
No ID Peony leaning on Aconitum foliage

Sherry -I really like the persicaria Virginiana, I don't know why it always gets ignored when I visit the nursery.... I guess it's the no flowers thing :)

Catkin I love seeing eryngiums, for some reason I'm always attracted to the pricklier plants.

That and daisies, these are a weed all over the highway roadsides but I can't kick them out of the garden. Here they are with the first phlox (a little weather weary) of the season.

    Catkin I love seeing eryngiums

Me too! There is nothing like them,,,IMO a great addition to a perennial garden

(If it doesn't rain anymore and the wind backs off, our "Big Blue" should be at its peak in the next week).

I usually hang out at another forum. Wow, this thread is great. Here's my best combo in its second year.

    Caryopterus and Penstemon

Bumping up with a few combos from tonight...

    Shasta daisy with coreopsis Zagreb

Stachys cotton candy (first yr) with carnation pinks and artemisia

Baby's breath with hakonechloa macra aureola grass and rozanne geranium

    Wonderful photos everyone. Thank you.

I've been lazy with photos this year but remember when we were sowing tall verbena seeds? Mine are up and blooming, a bit thin so far but they are working well with the 'Los Lunas' Little Bluestem plants I ordered from HCG. Its a work in progress. Did yours come up? I couldn't find the old post so I'm posting it here. I plan to let these just go to seed and naturalize in that spot and hope for a better showing of them next year. They are tall and a couple started blooming since late May, some are still short.

    Did yours come up?

    Good memory tr2.

I got sidetracked this spring and it was so late by the time I put them in the ground and to make a long story short they went in a location which has tall wild grasses and thistles and raspberry canes. So I have no idea if they germinated and are able to compete with all the nearby 'hellions'. If I see nothing by September I will purchase more seeds this winter.
