Daffodil and hyacinth bulbs

There were a bunch of bulbs under trees at my apartment, and I've been wanting to move them to a sunnier location (we're allowed to garden here, so digging up and moving bulbs is fine with management). I was planning on doing this in the fall, since my apartment is very warm and I didn't think that'd be good storing conditions for bulbs. But I think the yard crew sprayed herbicide in one of the beds, so to save the bulbs I dug them all up.

So now I have a couple dozen daffodil bulbs and maybe a half dozen hyacinth bulbs, and I have no idea how to store them so they'll be okay to plant in the fall. Can I put them in the fridge? Should I stick them in the crawl space? It's very humid here, so while the crawlspace is cool, it's pretty damp, plus there's bugs under there. What do you guys think would be the best thing to do with them?

You do not need to wait till fall to plant them. Do it now - they'll keep better in the ground than anywhere else. Just hold back with much watering and no fertilizing until you see the green emerge in spring.

A problem with refrigerator storage is the gas let off by some fruits. It can destroy the flower bud within the bulb. Apples are particularly harmful ( ethylene gas ).

Is the crawlspace moisture coming from the soil? Would a shallow cardboard box with crumpled newspaper allow the bulbs to stay dry? That is if you can't plant immediately.

I agree with planting them straight away, preferably in a well-drained area. (Such as a raised garden bed or in a deep pot.) Don't water them until the Fall, though an initial watering in might be okay.

If you can't plant them straight away, store them in a dry place. Moisture will encourage mould which will make the bulbs very unpleasant to deal with.
