Tackling the Bed

last modified: 11 years ago

I have a ton of clearing and decorating left to do in our new home. This first year (moved in last August) we've lived with a lot of placeholders and some intentionally low-priced items. One of these placeholders has been the bedcover in the Master.

I really want a custom, bespoke spread for the bed in here. The most beautiful bedcover we ever had was a spread I made myself, with reversible lining and a corded edge. I am not willing to work that hard anymore over a sewing machine, but would like any suggestions on where I could order a wonderful quality bedcover.

I am including a pic of the bed itself and would like your opinion on what style/pattern would look nice in here. The bed is new, so that is not going anywhere. So, GWs- use your mad decorating skills and help me tackle this BED!

Hi Redux- that cover is $60 bed in a bag from a discount store. I loved the pattern, but the cover is not good quality and it is too short on the sides for my deep mattress. If I could get this look with the FEEL I want, I would be pleased though. The bed feels really cheap right now when you climb into it...not the sheets but the cover.

Neiman-Marcus/Horchow usually has high-end bedding that I think would fit your style.

I just came from the linen bedding thread, so of course I started thinking linen would look great with your bed but if you want cording and finery the fabric might work but the look might be too rustic for you.

I just got a catalog from Garnet Hill and they have comforters or duvets in linen, silk and cotton. Cuddledown is another place that has some really nice bedding.

I would hit a fabric store and just start petting stuff until I felt what I wanted.

I really want a custom, bespoke spread for the bed in here.

Why? Are you matching something else? WT?

It seems to me that, unless you want something specific, it is a much better value to start to by looking at what is available off the shelf.

    Brands to look at:

    Pine Cone Hill

    Ann Gish

    Bella Notte

    Frette

    Serena and Lily

    Anthopologie

Of course, the current look is still mostly white with a white duvet, and a throw or "bed scarf" along with a a decorative pillow or two to add color. I like your three white euro squares with the two sleeping pillows, but some are starting to pare down on pillows and lay them flat.

I have been looking for quality bed linens just like you. I made my last one and feel the same. There are several websites that do custom bed linens online and if I knew how to post them here I would, but I do not. Be prepared for the cost. If your bed is King the minimum yardage will be 12 yards, then add the labor. Most of the bedspreads are made in another country and the quality shows. Do a search on custom bedspreads.

Calico Corners.com will give you some ideas about pricing. As you already know the fabric will be your biggest expense.

Redux- I love Bella Notte, but had to laugh when I was shopping at my salesperson's superior attitude. No, those are not the only nice linens in the world:) Running the math leads me to believe that after I find the right materials, it will actually be more reasonable to have a local seamstress run them up. This is what my friend in Bristol, Va. does, and what I will do this time.

Thank Babbs- we have a Calico in Houston that I'll be visiting. The cost is not a factor for this item as long as it is exactly right. I am hoping to come up with a summer and winter bed- We shall see.

Look to the lovely carpet and start from there. I can see a blue and white bed that picks that up. And light blue is perfect with the dark wood. Monogram? Other motif? Some accent textile a la ML Bullard?

If you are looking for something truly original and custom, head over to Etsy. There are some very talented people there and you may even be able to find an Etsy person who is local to you.

Select your fabrics and have someone make the comforter or coverlet or duvet cover for you. As for sheets, IMO patterned sheets have a less "luxe" appearance than white or off white with tipped edges. I would suggest a Schweitzer Linens catalog to see nice bedclothes from a variety of good manufacturers. For your bed, I would think a very nice cover of some sort, folded at the bottom of the bed, and white sheets with a lovely blue cording or chain type embroidery would be very nice.

Finally, I would resist the urge to have shams made of the coverlet fabric, which is a very matchy, late 80's look that has hung on far too long!

A couple of examples, an understated look in a gray blue that I think would look wonderful with your bed, and a bolder blue color:

    Perfect with the rug kswl.

Kswl2- yes, exactly the direction I am looking for:) Something that won't fight the rug and has the degree of luxe that beckons one to sleep.

Natalia- I clicked on the link but it didn' t connect. Will try again tomorrow.

I used Calico Corners for a fitted quilted bedspread for DS2's bedroom. It has welting and was done to my measurements to make sure it covered the side rails and low foot rail. It came out great and I will probably use them to make a fitted cover for the king bed in the master bedroom.
