Do you happen to have a largish tree that they could be suckering from?

It's most definitely tree suckers...my hawthorn sends out hundreds.

Yes, the large patch is congregated around a tree. The first two photos were taken about 1 or 1.5 feet away from the tree. The furtherest weed is about 5 feet away.

So these could be suckers? These look different from the little stragglers attached to my tree.

Could you take a picture of the tree (closeup of leaves and one of overall habit)? Or do you happen to know what it is?

Hawthorns don't have leaves that look like that...I'm no tree expert but to me, it looks more like an ornamental crabapple (malus).

Thanks for the suggestion donna_in_sask. The branches are weepy and produced pink/purple flowers in May. The berries tend to litter the yard.

So, in general is the best thing to do to just uproot/clip the suckers that have been popping up? I do not need more trees. It seems like suckers can pop up when the tree is stressed or for no reason at all.
