New Formal Dining Room Causes Decorating Paralysis :)

New house, old furniture. Loving our new dining room- I chose a dark grey/blue for the walls and a colorful canvas from Z Gallerie as shown in pics. However, our old table, chairs and hutch (all in black) don't seem to fit the style or scale of this room. I desperately need suggestions on table, chairs, rug, and drapes as well as whether or not the canvas I chose "fits" this room. I selected lighting (as shown in pics) from Restoration and Crate and Barrel but now I am second guessing those as well.

The adjoining kitchen and great room are painted a lighter grey with white wall and floor cabinets topped with a honed black granite slab top and a black island with carerra white marble counter top. Our back splash is small subway white tiles with stainless appliances.The floors throughout are a very dark wood although not black.

I am so open to suggestions!

I think the painting is hung too low.

Agree with Jayme on the picture...and maybe a larger rug in the dining room would make the chairs feel less constrained and give more backdrop to the table and chairs. No pictures on the kitchen, but it sounds good! The white rug is good with the trim.

Given what you've said, not sure where you want to go with this room, but with what you have now, I could see possibly white lacquer matching console tables to either side of the hutch. Move the palm to possibly the other side of the room. Graphic print drapes either black and white or a strong pattern with some of the colors of the picture.

Thanks Jayme, I like the one on the left for sure! I just need a more formal, finished look. I am wondering if I remove the hutch and do white built ins along the back wall if that'd look nice.

Honestly, I love everything that you've done to the room so far! The wall color is very nice and warm. I love the light fixture , the table and the hutch. I think all your pieces fit the space very well. To brighten the room some, you could change the rug to one that has some colors in it (like beige, tan, blue, green, grey , rust or red). A mixture of any of these colors will add a nice accent to the room. add a table runner to the table. on top of it, place One or two vases of flowers and some candles, or a small plant and some candles. You could add panels to the window using one of the colors from a more colorful rug. Also, hang the picture higher! You could add another tall plant to the left of the hutch to help balance that side of the room. Please post pictures of your finished room!

Here are some pics of the kitchen and great room for an idea on color scheme, overall. What color drapes and rug? Maybe a mirrored buffet rather than the tall black hutch? Upholstered shairs?

I like the dark furniture with the white woodwork and paint color..but I also like lighter furniture/are u planning to change it all out?

Elisha, does your table have a leaf? It looks too long for the space and it definitely is oversized for the rug you presently have. Ideally, the legs of your chairs should stay on the rug when they are pulled away from the table.

think your colors so far look good. Table looks out of scale. Can you take a leaf out? Feel texture needs to be added to the room, everything , walls, rug, and furniture are all solid colors. maybe some upholstered end chairs in a pattern or slipcover the backs of the ones you have and put one on each side of the hutch. pattered tone on tone drapes in a silver/purple ( not dark) textured silk.

Given the white and black in your kitchen, that looks like a good base re: color, etc.. for the dining room and family room if they're all adjoining. Is there an extra leaf in the table? As has been noted, it looks overscale. Think you could bring more white into both the family room and dining room given the white in the kitchen if they're all adjoining. White in pillows or throws, possibly art or decor in the family room with some color if not much there to reference your new art. For the dining room, perhaps a white console where the hutch is, with either art or a mirror above it. Perhaps drapes on the windows, black and white graphic print or color, particularly if just do a mirror above the console. Think you have great basics, just need mostly finishing touches to tie it all together.
