If you have room to grow it do it. I don't because of my limited space. Whenever I grew them they were great but not productive.

I always said, that no matter how FEW tomatoes BW gives, and no matter how LATE - expect September - I STILL want to grow 1-2 BW in my garden. For me there is NOTHING tastier than a BW. But, as French say: De Gustibus Non Est Disputandum.

Depends on where you live and how you grow it. It is not known for good production but is more productive in the northern zones than in the south and does well in ground but requires a 15-20 gallon container to do well. There are many just as good and maybe better varieties so I wouldn't go out on a financial limb just to grow it.

digdirt, I live in NJ. I assume you mean 15-20 NURSERY gallons? Or actual gallons? I might just try it then, on a prioritized ground location, since I have more than enough space and daniel says it's worth it. Growing on the ground, it should only be about $5 and a bit of soil/fert.

shijitake, make sure to prune to 1-2 stems. No "jungle" for BW.

Leave a few suckers at the bottom. They will provide food when you will remove the yellowish / brownish leaves.

And of course mulch and fungicide from day one.

As Dave said, there are other varieties that are much more productive and very tasty too, but for me BW has a MAGICAL taste.

I'd suggest to plant in the ground if you can. With this heat wave, you might have watering problems with containers - either plastic or fabric.

Wow! Just 1-3 from one plant? My yard is big and sunny but because of the way the sun moves the other tomatoes may cast shadows on the other. Planting this may be difficult. Maybe I'll try next year.

Btw, my tomatoes are on the lawn. Is it ok that grass is growing around them? If not, can the grass grow through mulch? I don't want to kill the grass on the lawn (it's my dad's).

When we have a bumper crop of tomatoes we divvy 'em up and take bags to the neighbors. My wife segregates the Brandywines - they stay at our house.

I've had years with 2-3 on a plant and other years with 10-20. I'm in Mercer County, NJ, so your results may vary.

I only had 5-6 BW tomatoes per plant maximum.

Wow now I really want to grow one! But my local garden center ran out! Ugh I should've bought it the day I saw it! I can't wait til next year. Is it worth growing from seed so late? I'm sure I can talk my parents in letting me grow a tomato indoors and keep it warm through the fall/winter!

Brandywines are definitely a challenge. This is my 2nd year growing pink Brandys after last year's disappointment ( 3 fruit from 2 plants) I refused to give up. Why? Because they are by far the best tomato ive tasted - nice big 1 lb fruit, sweet, incredibly juicy and just a little tart.

I bought 2 hardy plants this year in mid- Feb. after potting them up I left them out in sun during day and brought them each night til I planted them in raised bed the 1st week of March. By early April they were 4' with lots of flowers. I picked the 1st fruit June 20th and 2 more last week. Sadly, I had to pull both plants last week, 1 with 5 or 6 small unripe fruit still on. Both plants looked to have what a local master gardener diagnosed as possible fusarium wilt. After sending sample into our County ag lab it was diagnosed as russet mites, a correctable problem. My other varieties are doing well and while most are more productive none come close to the Brandywine in flavor. I'm an inexperienced organic gardener and each year is definitely a learning process

Calavo, you could save the unripe tomatoes and leave them out on your table. It may not taste as good as vine ripened but they will ripen on their own!

Brandywine is NOT productive.

I plant Brandywine Sudduth from Mariseeds.com. I'm also growing Brandy Boy this year (hybrid of Brandywine allegedly with the Brandy taste and the XX Boy productivity (Best Boy, Big Boy, who knows). We'll see how they produce and how they taste.

I'd love to get a Burpee hybrid that delivers on both sides (taste and productivity) on the Brandywine family tree.

I did a bit of search and a poster said he finds red be to be the best. Most productive and tasty.

Daniel, the pic of those 9 fruits are on one branch. Just went to take a peek at my 3 Brandywine OTV's out front and they all have double digit fruits and still growing. I'm pretty sure some plants will reach 20.
