restoring an ivy bed

An old island of ivy in my lawn was decimated by deer two years in a row. With much of the leaves gone, poison ivy took hold. To get rid of the poison ivy I did more injury to the ivy. It is the third summer I've dealt with this ivy - weeding it, mulching it, defending it. Today's challenge was crab grass that was too tough to pull out by hand. but it also occurred to me that maybe it didn't matter if I got the roots out, as long as I kept clearing room for the ivy. Won't ivy eventually trump everything? I really don't want to start from zero and kill it in order to kill the weeds... Thanks for any advice on the most efficient strategy to accomplish this.
