[Over on SDMB] they have a forum called Mundane Pointless Stuff I Must Share . This one is better for ponds on GW.]

The wife has an approximately 1000 gallon stock watering tank buried to ground level with some cattails, waterlilies, and a few fine comets. Above ground is a 250 gallon tank with a lot of iris that overflows into the big tank. Above that is a 50 gallon tank that overflows into the 250. OK, two waterfalls and a big tank.

Saturday I enjoy the fish on the way to the mailbox.

Monday I go to the mail box and 1000 gallon of water is missing! Fish are all present and accounted for; alive, laying in a couple of inches of water in the bottom.

I fill the tank.

Two weeks now passed and everything is copacetic. Just like the previous two years.

I had things like that happened to me. My above ground pond has watercress and other plants growing. Sometimes the overgrown plants block the outlet that water suppose to go through to lower in ground pond, so water overflow over the edge of above ground pond. The water loss will only stop when the water level drop below the pump in the inground pond. 1000lb water can disappear overnight.

Scary - isn't there some kind of valve that can turn off the power to the pump if it goes under a certain level... I need to look into that....

You can rig a float switch to shut off the pump.

I did get a float switch from HD, but it only worked for a short while. I gave up after that.

Go online and get a proper float switch and valve.

in waterfall pool, i had hyacinths. one time they clogged flow of water into waterfall. all pond's 1,500gals. water overflowed from waterfall pool w/in 30 minutes.
