6a reporting for duty! Black Krim is the only one of those I have grown and it did well but is prone to cracking. Indian Stripe is a strain of Cherokee Purple so I would expect that it would be close in tolerance.

Thanks fellow Midwesterner! How did you like Black Krim? I've heard a couple reports that's it's really tart.. made me nervous since I often lean toward the sweet side.

I second , BK is prone to cracking but taste was very good. And of course, CP is my top choice so far. I am also growing Black From Tula, Arbuznyi , Kumato and Black Cherry for the first time. Too early to review. I consider them "BROWN" not black.

Since CP is delicious and productive, never grew other darks. This year trying BK and plants look very healthy. The BK has the largest fruit out of 40 plants in my garden. I hope black does not crack :-)

To prevent cracking, pick them at color break and bring them inside.

My Black Krim is doing spectacular! I think it really likes our climate... And so does CP.

I think they're all great choices. although I'm not familiar with Vorlon. My first ripe tomato this year was Indian Stripe.

Another to look for would be JD's Special C-Tex, which reportedly does well in hot/humid areas. It originated in Texas.

I think you'll be happy with whatever you choose next year. If you're limited to 3 plants, perhaps just rotate your choices each year and see how they perform for you.

Nitsua - Vorlon is a cross between Cherokee Purple & Pruden's Purple, which definitely sounds interesting. I almost bought seeds for JD's Special C-Tex! I wish I'd heard about it before I bought so many others, I will definitely add it to my ever-expanding yearly rotation!

Seysonn I hope you'll come back with a report on all those varieties at the end of your season!

I think BK is maybe a little less tart than CP. I am not much of a taste tester but I would say it has a mild smoky flavor. I would not say it is on the sweeter side. Every one would probably tell you something different though.

I don't like tart tomatoes and I loved Cherokee Purple, Black Krim, Black Early and Indian Stripe. I wouldn't say that any of those varieties was tart.

I think that Indian Stripe was the best because it was the most productive. Cherokee Purple was really early the year that I grew it, but then I had to wait ages for the next ripe tomato.....

Black Krim is our favorite tomato. My husband never liked tomatoes but began to once he tasted the homegrowns. He really likes Black Krim and I have no trouble growing them in our usually hot, humid summers. This year started out dry but has been cooler and rainy the last month. and it's still doing well.

The only other blacks I've grown were Cherokee Purple and Black Prince. Both were good, but I went back to BK this year (last year I accidentally killed most of my seedlings so had to rely on donation from my brother and whatever the local stores had, hence the Black Prince.)

Black Krim is by far my favorite tomato! I have ten plants worth of them. I did lose an entire crop of tomatoes last year due to the early blight. If you grow them, beware, they can get very big and bushy. This one I transplanted about 3 weeks ago when it was about 10" tall and looked more like Charlie Brown's Christmas tree. It already has three tomatoes growing on it, too.

Thank you for the update - CP has just broken my heart the last couple of years, and has been replaced with Black Krim (love, love, love). Now that my entire family is addicted to the black tomatoes, you have talked me into trying Black from Tula next.

If you get any ripe Japanese Trifele Blacks to taste you'll have to let us know how those were (I could handle some really late tomatoes here, if they're worth the wait).

Grew CP, Carbon, BK Paul R, and Vorlon this year we really liked the Vorlon's, good size production and taste

Sey, we had a few months between comments on this thread. So, I wanted to ask you here in October...is Black from Tula still a winner in your book? How was the size and taste? My CP's were kind of shaky this year...after a fantastic 2014 with my CP's. Go figure.

Sorry I haven't grown Black from Tula but you can't go wrong much with the taste of the "black Tom's in my book, the growing conditions though can be problematical

Update On Blacks/browns/purple:

1- CP sent to vacation.LOL

2- Black From Tula did very well til the end of season and it was fairly early too.

3- Kumato F2 was as expected, in size, color and texture. Will plant F3.

4- My own brown heart did better than even BFT. Will come back:

5- Black Chery was a dud. Bye bye!

6- JBT was too late and I won't grow it in 2016

NEW ADDITIONS:

7- I am getting Indian Stripes seeds. Heard so much about it.

8- Recently I bough a heirloom tomato from store. It seems to be Black Seaman. It will compete with the rest of the gang.

Sey, I believe I recommended BFT to you. I personally love it. Indian Stripe is a must for me, very productive and holds up well and delish. I grew Margaret Curtain and it did very well also. Next year I want to try ISPL and Spudatula. Having trouble narrowing down those blacks, which I am a huge fan of . I grew out Bear Creek as a seedling but gave them away so I have no idea of how it did. I'm also looking at Dixiewine. Yikes!

Sey, just a comment about JBT. I also recommended it, but wasn't a fan either.

I'm keen to try Black from Tula next year, because you recommended it. I LOVE Indian Stripe, and I also want to try Paul Robeson as I've heard that it's early and a good one for our area.

So many tomatoes, so little growing space!!!!!!

Seriously, it's nuts! I'm not trying Paul Robeson because I have a feeling that it won't do well in our climate and I'd rather try other ones. So I'm passing on that one for now.
