I would only be painting the untreated portion of the stringer shown in 2nd photo

In the first photo I would paint all the way around to what looks like another corner on the far right of the photo. That part might be technically wallboard and not the trim board, but I think it might look better all painted the same color as the trim. You can always try it and revert back if you don't like it. Paint is not hard.

Thanks for your input. So, paint as apposed to staining?

We are in the midst of the exact same dilemma!! What did you decide? We chose black paint for risers, medium stain on treads and are torn between staining or painting the risers. Meanwhile, there is painted gray wainscoting on the left side wall that meets the riser at the first few steps. All trim is white. Would love to see your finished staircase for inspiration!

I'm still in renovation overload. I'd did so much painting and staining last summer (I'm the handy man at our house) just haven't tackled it yet, but I plan to paint same as walls upstairs. Good luck. Send me your pic.

I agree, paint it the same as the trim and doors.
