Food for thought

I was talking with a local custom harvesting company owner recently. I asked him for a quote for harvesting mature (dried) PEPH peas. He quoted somewhere around $35.00 per acre and said he could send the shelled peas straight to bags at his harvester.

That was all it took to goad me into buying 2cwt of PEPH pea seed. St. Francis of the Woods has dedicated an acre to Vision Farms, Inc. for growing potatoes next year. In preparation, we will plant the whole acre with inoculated PEPH peas next week to improve the soil. We will harvest some as shellies and let the rest mature. So, make food and prep the soil for potatoes all at the same time. The mature (dry) peas will be donated to the food bank to improve the food security of the most at risk families.
