How difficult is Japanese Maple grafting

last modified: 11 years ago

I want to start a small Japanese Maple collection (I already have a sizable cactus collection) and to save money on them and also for the satisfaction of it I want to learn how to graft them. I have a few Japanese Maple seedlings that grew from my neighbors tree dropping its seeds on my yard and I have some purchased JM seeds stratifying in the fridge. However I have heard that JM grafting is quite difficult and requires special facilities. So is it really that difficult, or do I have to acquire better facilities? My only experience with grafting is grafting cacti and I have a few successful cactus grafts so I am not a total stranger to grafting, though I realize they are two totally different plants. I also have attempted chip and T budding on fruit trees but for various reasons they were not successful.
