to me it looks rather like a cunninghamia lanceolata (aka "china fir"). FWIW, the "fir" moniker is deceptive as it's more closely related to redwoods, dawn redwoods, cryptomerias, and baldcypresses and even junipers---all members of the cupressaceae family than to "true" firs (abies) which along with pines, hemlocks, and spruces are member of the pinaceae family. OTOH, "china firs" while NOT firs are indeed originally from china.

Yes: blue China fir.

Thank you!

and if the day comes ... it will have fir cones ... not pine cones ...

ken

Ken, at the risk of being possibly pedantic but also certainly and literally true the cones that might be produced by that tree will be NEITHER fir cones or pine cones but truly now and forever "cunninghamia cones", the fact that people (including probably both you and me at times) may sometimes use various actually unrelated and inaccurate but commonly used names for various plants may sometimes be amusing (and sometimes confusing) but it certainly does not ultimately make them correct, helpful, or true names or labels. FWIW, some folks in some places apparently sometimes call cunninghamias "monkey puzzles" which can lead to no end of confusion between them and the "true" primate puzzlers which are araucarias (sometimes known as "chile pines!!!)---somewhat similar looking but not closely related at all.

Thank you everyone for the information. We have many kinds of interesting conifers on our property that we bought a couple years ago. I'm trying to identify them in a very haphazard way (like, gee, I wonder what that tree is?). I really should picture and catalog them ... maybe some day.
