Layout- help me decide between two layouts please!

HI! All along I had one layout, but couldn't fit a 60" fridge in the space I had, which is really what I wanted (30 fridge 30 freezer). Just this morning I realized I could move things around and do it. Which layout do you like better? One give me better cooking layout (fridge closer to me) the other gives me bigger fridge, but across the island.

won't let me post 2 pics so other layout will be in reply below. Additionally, moving the double oven gets me more counter space next to cooktop.

thank you mama goose. I moved the sink to that side because i figured I need more room to put stuff down to put groceries away in the fridge.... maybe I can move to the center of island.

One side or the other is preferable, to have a larger prep surface. If you need a wider drop zone on the end closer to the fridge and pantry, then the other corner would be better than the middle. If you put the trash pull-out under the prep sink it could still be shared with clean-up, unless your family needs two trash receptacles.

I agree with MamaGoose about moving the prep sink over to the other end of the island. Option 2 does create a barrier island, but if you can do a small undercounter fridge, between range and pantry....it might work! I do like the oven/baking center in that location.

The smaller fridge could just be for items you use a lot, when you're cooking. Maybe milk, cheese, cream, a few veggies, etc. It might be nice to have the big fridge out of the main work area, if you have a lot of 'snacking' traffic :)

My concern is aisle widths. The width between the island and the right hand side is 3'1" (37"). If this doesn't take into account counter you will be down to perhaps 34" aisle width when subtracting potential counter overhang from both sides.

I'm assuming you have kids given the homework room and I can envision (may not happen - you know your routines better than me that's for sure) a traffic spot that may require traffic lights and that is the area that comes out of the homework room (and whatever other rooms are down the hall) and into the kitchen or through to the dining room, coming down the stairs and into the kitchen and also standing at the beverage center.

The other area of concern is the seating at the top of the table. The aisle width is 4'5" but if someone is trying to sit down and then sitting down they need about 2-3' to do that. It will be tough to walk behind them and you won't beable to open the DW.

There's just no breathing room or air in this space. The room can't take a deep breath. But not my space.

Are groceries entering from the door at the bottom middle? From that direction you have convenient space on the back of the island for a drop zone. Do you grocery shop once a week? You'll be using the prep sink every day.

Hands down #1 with the suggestions of Mama. I also agree with bifenton that your aisles are too narrow. If you move your table to the edge of the island opposite the sink, that will give you more space in the clean up aisle.

However you'll still need to shorten the island or the table to make the aisle near the fridge wide enough. 42" would be minimum. Otherwise, I think it's a well designed plan.

thank you for the feedback. I will make the island smaller to make larger aisles.

BTW, measurement is 3'7" not 3'1". I just rechecked it. So, that should be fine, right?

My fridge is 30", single door, and the aisle in front of it is 40"--but the island only partially overlaps it, so there is some room to open the door fully and step back. Most of the time we don't open the door far enough for the need to step back. The 43" aisle is functional--the only problem will be if, for instance, you're putting away groceries and someone wants to go to the sink. My response in that case would be, "Please give me a minute, or go around." ;)

lol mama goose exactly! I am really trying here to have the "perfect" kitchen, but I'll settle for "functions well most of the time" I really only grocery shop when the kids are in school, not when they are home. if they need to get to the sink, it won't kill them to walk the long way around!

bifenton & cpartist, I know the dishwasher is in a bad place for sitting at table & loading dishes, but I plan on loading dishwasher when kids are done eating. It's all a give & take, and having the table attached to the island really freed up a ton of space in the kitchen, allowing me a whole wall of cabinets, so it is totally worth it for me. beverage center is for coffee/tea/seltzer/water which is mostly in the morning & during dinner, so shouldn't be too much traffic there.

yep, the 3'7" is better - glad you checked. I just point stuff out but you have already thought about it and the compromises are ok with you and that's what counts.

Can't wait to see the finished kitchen.
