Turn off the shutoff valves, disconnect the P trap, unscrew the clips, and lift out the sink and faucet as a whole. Know where your whole home water shutoff valve is located. Shutoffs tend to leak when old, sometimes quite dramatically and you may need to get that off in a hurry.

You really should consider hiring a pro for this.

Thanks Sophie. We just couldn't get the P trap disconnected because it is plastic piping that had been glued after it was screwed together. We are so grateful to have the steps confirmed. We ended up cutting it as the new sink will not be in the same spot. Our "starter" house came with a beautiful two acres and about the best neighbors ever so we have endured ugly and bad and poorly constructed for many years and finally have made the remodel it versus sell it decision. The only way we could afford the remodel was to demo ourselves so that pros could install much better stuff. Thanks again for your supportive advice.

Stuff a rag in the cut pipe end. Sewer gas is poisonous.

We actually left the water trap bit in place and cut higher up as the new sink will be replumbed. All we had to do was get the old bit out. But thanks, we will add a rag above the water trap just to be safer.

Don't know if you have cats or not, but we put one of their lightweight toy sponge balls in the disconnected pipe to prevent the sewer gases....fit perfect. She found it during the night and pulled it out to play with it. :)

Put it back and tied a plastic bag around it.
