I wanted to purchase this table but was told by a salesman that the copper surface gets very warm/hot.

I am not sure who shared that information with you, but I can tell you that this same table is found at several resorts including the Ritz Carlton, Omni Hotel, W hotel and top of the Art hotel restaurant in Denver. These are places where there are many many people sitting around them and we have never had any issues. We also show these at home and garden shows and have not had any issues.
