Totally Re-Doing Our Kitchen

We have granite picked out. It's a pretty busy style..called Copenhagen…lots of brownish tones, some grey and a lot of cream color blended in all over. We are thinking of using a Porcelanosa backsplash called Tribal White Pearl as the white parts pick up on our white cabinet doors (with brown rub on them). Not sure if it's going to be too busy together as the granite is a horizontal plane and I think with the white cabinets it might look very nice. Need opinions please…here's my flooring I'm having installed, cabinet with backsplash held up net to it and the granite we are using for island and countertops.

Need to see busy granite with white cabinets and a simple backsplash

I think the backsplash would be very hard to clean.

Love that crazy granite. I'd run it right up to the cabs and/or ceiling.

This is my granite in the kitchen and bathrooms which is a bit busy. I chose a 4 inch square taupe basic tuscan tile as my backsplash for the kitchen. I also added a bit of pizzaz with a dual row of copper 1 inch tiles that alternate shiny and satin finish. Your off white cabinets would look good with this granite also. This is a consideration for your backsplash dilemma.

Listen to the posters who say a backsplash with detail will not go with your granite. Keep it simple, without accent borders ar glitzy materials. You granite choice is too pretty to ruin with a competing backsplash.

    Hello!
I know you are probably feeling overwhelmed with all these posts. Which of the materials are you tied into? The flooring is great and does not pose a problem. Once I know which material you are tied into, then we can choose the other material. I, too, feel that the backsplash needs to compliment your granite. I think that we can find something similar in pattern, but have the colorways be more complimentary, if we have the ability to change out the backsplash. Let me know. I welcome the opportunity to provide more direction, once I have more information from you!
    Cheers,
    m.

Are you locked into the cabinets? Simplify if possible. Let granite be the star.

Here is a busy granite with a similar backsplash. Plus, your cabinets are busier than these:

The cabinetry is not the issue. The cabinetry will go with most any choices made. The issue is the granite being the dominant texture and the backsplash material wanting to be dominant. One needs to take the backseat to the other. I think that the granite is beautiful and that the backsplash just needs to be toned down. I think that the mosaic pattern is okay, but that it needs to be a neutral based color pallette. A travertine mosaic similar in pattern could be beautiful. Need something that allows the granite to sparkle!

we definitely DON'T want a travertine or tumbled marble backsplash. Probably would have loved it a few years ago but not liking it now. The granite is so much nicer than it appears in the pictures. We don't want a basic white subway tile---too plain and very common. Something different. I looked on the website of Walker Zanger. A lot of nice stuff there. Also, will go back to the store Porcelanosa. They have a lot of neutral stuff there and I think if we spend some time there we may just find something that works. Being that the granite is a horizontal plane and the white cabinets are up and down, I'm not too concerned about one stealing the show from the other. I don't have a lot of backsplash to put up…only about 30 feet total. The rest if cabinet to ceiling. The mosaic I first posted is a pretty neutral looking one as far as the many we have seen. I don't like the long skinny rectangles of glass I see in a lot of places. I like either glass or porcelain for backsplash material. Was thinking neutral color would work and pull style from a not too busy pattern in the porcelain.

post from pcmom1…I DO NOT like that kitchen. That backsplash is much busier than the mosaic I posted in my first group of pictures and way too busy with that counter top (IMO)

I didn't expect you to like it....just trying to post some photos of kitchens that ended up with too much going on. I am sure you will end up with some great choices.

We redid our kitchen last summer. So many choices and lots of stress...

I understand. In the end, I understand I will get a lot of opinions and you have to go with what you like best

I had a kitchen redo meltdown trying to pick a color to paint the cabinets. Knew I wanted a sort of white on white look, but trying to pick that neutral shade....

Opinions are one thing, but there are professional designers who know what they are talking about who have tried to help and offered sound advice. Is there a designer at the store where you are purchasing your cabinets/granite who you can ask for options? In the end you are correct, you have to go with what appeals to you, but as I pointed out in my first post, you can love each individual element, the colors can all look great, but in the end, when it's installed it may not look like you expected and those are big expensive mistakes to make and have to live with.

I like you first tile, it goes well together. I love your kitchen.

@sharlowm…I agree..it has to all work together. Another option is to wait until the cabinets and granite are installed and then bring home some backsplash samples…see what actually looks good where it is actually going…then order it (only takes a week at most stores)

I think that is the best option for you! :) Its a hard decision to make, expensive, messy, etc. and you only want to do it once and do it right. I was lucky, I ended up moving out of my house where I blew it with my backsplash! lol. We downsized after my dtr left for college...There was no way my husband was going to let me spend more $$ ripping out/replacing that brand new backsplash just because it looked so busy! :(

Waiting for the backsplash makes sense. Certainly is safer!

Great minds think alike? I am 100% for number 3 also.

I like #2 the best, but its hard to tell the scale like this.

They are all from Walker Zanger. They have some nice selection there. A little pricey but we don't need too much. Not a lot of wall space

    #3 is beautiful!

Here's #1 but in an all white backsplash. Thoughts?

Even in white, I think you'll start disliking the look after a short time and end up tearing it out. It was mostly unanimous about #3. It looked perfect. After all, its yours & your wife's decision in the end that matters. Personally I don't like either subway tile or those sheets of glass tile, colored or otherwise.

    I like #3 a lot too

    Either 2 or 3

Here's number one sample, not grouted. Obviously I would use a white grout it's the crackle finish

My wood flooring came in today. Here's a sample I threw down

    Nice.

    Not #1.

2 looks better to me because of the dark gray grout that picks up tones in the slab. If you go with 3 use dark grout. It will totally work with the stone.

You need a solid color solid surface backsplash. No grout lines, no gloss, no competition, and super functional.

I think that 99.9% of us are drawn to #3 because it is the simplest of the choices shown. See comment from pro above. Even simpler would probably be better still.

A friend of mine choose gray subway tile. I liked it.

I decided to wait until my kitchen cabinets are in and the granite is installed…then hold up the backsplash to see what looks great

    Good plan!

Why not just use the granite as the backsplash too. I did that and have never regretted it
  • 8 years ago

I love your floor and granite. If you have not purchased your kitchen cabinets I would go with something very very simply and I would forget about the brown texturing. I just redid my kitchen and had that option but I think it really dates the cabinets. I went with a warm white simple design and am very happy with it. as for the back splash you may want to consider it as the back splash too. Clean lines would look nice. Your idea of waiting until everything is in and then deciding is a good idea. Who says you have to have a back splash anyway.
