I love your pieces! But it seems like you have two focal points, with both an entertainment center and a fireplace in the room. I would begin by removing everything from the room except for the pieces you know you're keeping, then bring things back in as you want them. Build the room in layers, careful to not put too much in there. Look at living rooms on Houzz for placement inspiration, too.

Thank you dutchmother. You bring up a great point. The room is quite narrow but long- with that in mind- is it possible to create two conversation areas?

Sure! Our living room is enormous, so I divided it into 3 groupings, although I reduced it to two when we listed our house to make it feel more spacious. In the photos of my space, the main seating area is clustered around the fireplace, then we have a pedestal table at one end for games and/or extra seating, and the piano at the other end (where I also had a tall rectangle table behind the sofa with stools to sit on and play music). I divided our room because any other arrangement felt awkward. Just leave space between furniture pieces so the areas flow into each other easily.

I love your sofa; just wish the chaise was on the other end. Since that is the case, I would turn the chairs more toward the fireplace to make that a separate area. If the sofa can block the chairs, then the chairs have the right to turn their backs. ;-)

As for upholstery, have a look at the stuff Wild Chairy does for some ideas. With such an eclectic room, I think you could do something fun and interesting with the chairs. A couple of favorites:

I can't think of a better place to recline on a chez except in front of the fireplace. Joking aside. take a look at the predominant collection of shapes in the room, such as multiples of squares. Eliminate a few of them. For sure take the multiple candles to the basement. I do like grovers samples of upholstery for the chairs, however you do limit yourself when adding a print to the mix. Also multiple shapes of diamonds (another version of squares.)

Boy, I'm in love with your coved ceiling. Is your home of the 1920's or 30's era? If so, you may want to follow that period somewhat with your design ideas. Lucky you!!

I too wish the chaise was on the othe side. Le sigh! I had never heard of wild chairy- absolutely love the unexpected mix of patterns!

Thank you Sandra Clark. Our home was built in the 50s and doesn't have nearly as much character as the homes in our neighborhood. We are slowly adding more with woodwork and details. Luckily the ceiling came as is :). If I'm reading correctly you are suggesting removing some of the square shapes and adding more shape variety?

Any suggestions for drapes? I'm sure there are fab companies I don't know about.

Oops - forgot to mention rug needs to go as well. I don't know if it is evident in the photos but it is so off in terms of scale- way too small. I think it is 6'x8' and I would love an 8'x10' in that space. Please help me find something there too

The fireplace is wonderful. If it's a working fireplace and you use it a lot, put a sitting area there.
Replace the rug with a much larger one or use nothing at all- your floors are beautiful.

I agree you need a larger rug.

My recent post shows I'm not one to trust for advice. I love your blue chairs, adore the pattered rug, and love the candles because they provide a vertical that strikes me as violin strings. Understood there may be a few too many for the table to be useful but I really enjoy the use of bold pattern and vertical and horizontal elements that draw the eye through the space. Agreed that I can't wait to see the chairs.

Thank you cafecomm! The candlesticks have been a point of discussion but actually they were never meant for the table- I moved them when I cleaned the fireplace and mantle and forgot to put them back :).

It was too much trouble to reupholster your chair, so I just stole this one from Wild Chairy. If you go with the green, I'd go all the way. Love that color with the gray.

Will that TV/wine rack fit between the windows where there won't be any glare on it for viewing? If the measurements work out, I would pay to move the connections and then put the sectional on the TV wall. I'm not crazy about any of the other wood (coffee and end table) because they are dark, heavy, bulky and overpowering to the slim lines of your sofa. If the changed arrangement works then I'd find two pair of chairs to add to your room. One pair of stationary chairs can flank the FP, and a pair of swivel ones can flank the TV. Keep them all lightweight enough that all of them can be pulled closer to the sofa for conversation if needed.

@groveraxle- thank you for the mock up! I love it! I had originally thought about a pattern on the drapes but seeing the dark drapes you have there- I love that look! What fabric do you suggest? Keeping in mind that I'm looking to layer texture and add depth.

Love your barrel chairs and in a wonderful whimsy fabric they will look fantastic. Agree larger rug. Your shelving unit is too light weight for your room. And your coffee table is to heavy and too traditional. Move the shelving unit out and put a large art work on that wall with an accent chair with a small round end table. More seating for guests. When you build your shelving on the fireplace wall bring your collectables back in the room. A sleek rectangle coffee table or two square ottomans with trays will work better then what you have now.

bjakupi86, I'm quite partial to linen drapes. If you want even more texture, you could do burlap, but linen has a better hand.

groveraxle, one more question :) my sectional is all linnen, in terms of layering fabrics and textures, any other suggestions of drape fabric? Would a velvet be too heavy/dark?

I think velvet might be too heavy/formal. How about a slubby silk?

Ok everyone. Here is a little update. I'm working with an interior designer friend to get the fabrics for the chairs. I however have another dilemma/Problem. I found some drapes that would been perfect- color fabric etc. however they are 2-4 in too short. They were so cheap though and frankly we can't spend the amount of money on custom drapes. So 4 panels cost me $60. Should I keep and have a seamstress add a border of same fabric but in a different shade? I appreciate any ideas on how to keep and make it work....please!!! Here are some pics- here it looks like they are perfect but they are resting on our blinds- we haven't mounted yet

@groveraxle- what do you think about a cornice? a very tailored one. I could hang the curtains as low as they are now and have a cornice covering rod and top of curtain. i can't even picture what that would look like.

Not yellow. Have your designer friend help you with the decision after you choose the chair fabrics. My first choice, if you can match the curtain color and weight, would be a pattern...

Otherwise, depending on how you go with chairs, I'd do something with about the same value (darkness) as the curtains.

Groveraxle, do you have any suggestions for a side table? Looking to replace the one next to the sectional- it is just a place saver for now. Thanks I advance :)

bjakupi, let the side table be for now. Wait till you have your fabrics and rug decided before replacing it. I don't want to make a recommendation before seeing what direction the room is going to take.

Hi everyone! Just wanted to post an updated photo of where we are to date. The curtains have been hung (finally) and the built ins are finished. Still working on what goes on the shelves, and chairs etc. thank you for your help groveraxle, please feel free to give me more pointers :). The red wreath is just a placeholder from Christmas until we find something that looks good there

The built ins look great. Rule of thumb: 1/3 books, 1/3 objects, 1/3 empty space. This wall is your focal point. Don't go wimpy with a bunch of little, nondescript stuff. (Grover's rule: what's on the shelves at Hobby Lobby doesn't belong on your shelves.)

Hi all! Checking back in to get your opinions on this rug. It just arrived last night- its the Heritage Taupe Sisal rug from Crate and Barrel. My husband really likes it, and he's not usually one to comment on this kind of stuff. I like the color, but am questioning whether we should have purchased the bigger size. This is the 8x10

Can't see the far side, but if the rug doesn't extend past the chaise as much as it does on this end, adjust it or get a larger size. I like to see 1-2 feet of rug on either side of the sofa with chaise part entirely on it and the rug under the seat portion by at least 1/3 for true grounding effect. If your coffee table is more than 18" from the sofa, it is too far to be useful. That is quite a bulky looking table for your sectional. Have you thought of something lighter feeling? The end table is useless - too low for the sofa arms - so get rid of that or use it elsewhere. I think the barrel chairs will need a round table if you ever place them together. You might try an arc lamp in place of the table and let it hover above a new coffee table.

I prefer your original rug, it was just a wrong size..this one, adds nothing special to your room, plain

I like it with this new rug! The size is much better, and the fact that it doesn’t have a big pattern calms the room imo. Now I’d love to see some splash of color, such as the art that grover suggested above.

I think we’ll keep the rug this size, there is enough overhang on either side of the sectional. I realize the coffee table may not fit the style, but we love it.
