Well, without a doubt I'm no expert but can't wait to hear some thoughts on this. What I don't like to see is a change in leaf shape and Sunrise Sunset has smooth leaves not serrated. The spots I don't know about. I'd keep a close eye out for RRV. Is that green growth on the petiole if I have the right name of the plant part.

It's not focused enough to see what the spots might be.

Are there any mildew symptoms to account for the curling?

How old are these leaves?

Thank you, Patty - this is for sure Sunrise Sunset and the serrated leaf edges are quite normal. I don't think it is likely Rose Rosette Disease, but thanks for the warning.

Sorry, Michael - thanks for trying to help but you're right that it's not the greatest of photos (used my less than top of the line phone because it was handy.) While out of the 40 some roses I grow there is one rose (Dainty Bess) quite a distance away that has a touch of PM, but there has been none in this end of the garden and certainly none on SS. The curling could be heat and lack of water as I have very sandy soil and hadn't been able to water the garden this week. The spots on one leaf did have definite outlined circles within the spots but with no holes in them (does that make sense?) which made me think of anthracnose - just early symptom? It's the flaming scarlet red end leaf that caught my eye or I might not have seen the spotted leaves at all. I will keep on the lookout for more of these and post better photos if I find any more bright red or spotty leaves.

Unless the spots develop holes, they are likely cercospora rather than anthracnose.

I pulled a brilliant red new leaf off 'Gruss an Aachen' last week and supposed it was just a fluke that somehow failed to develop chlorophyll.

Sorry AnneCecillia SS is serrated check mine. It just seemed more exaggerated. Most of my roses have anthracnose at this point. With all the rain, humidity and cold nights it was bound to get started. Check the bottoms of leaves to see if spots go all the way through. I notice it when I see the center turning silver gray before it falls out.

Do the leaves have little tiny black dots on the back by any chance. It also reminds me of the bacterial disease that asters get. Not sure I've ever seen roses with it thou.
