Wondering about short window treatments

Our house was built in 1928 and reflects the time. Our 14' x 27' living room has one windowed door, 3 regular/normal size windows, plus one window that is the size of a picture window with two full size side windows attached. (very large) I've had full length 95" drapes for years and feel like the drapes are killing the room. I am thinking I would like to hang either 63" (windowsill) or 72" (about a foot below the windowsill) drapes. I already have ivory pleated shades on the windows (as the morning sun is very bright in our living room.) Are short drapes in a living room a no-no? The furniture in the picture is going as we have just purchased a new light grey sofa and plan to work around that. I would like to keep the beige walls - white trim and carpeting. Thanks!

The style now seems to be long. I don't think you would want them 72". Not sure how 63" would look. The ones you have now are too short they should touch the floor. Also they don't seem to be hung properly on the rod. Seeing as you already have pleated shades your option seems to be panels. I would do panels to the floor, wider in width than what you have now and only hang them on the 2 ends, like this picture.

Why do you think that drapery panels to the floor were killing the room before? It would be better to have the panels hit the floor. The other thing is, optimally, you would want the panels to appear to be able to close, so they panels should be fuller. What you may want to think about is a lighter color so the drapery doesn't appear heavy. Another option, what about doing a board mounted valance? It would also lighten the feel.

Those are really pretty windows. How about no drapes?

I think I'd keep all the panels on the outsides and not between the windows. It'll look more open and the drapes will be fuller.
