Which direction to run tile in the bathroom?

My husband and I are remodeling our spare bathroom and have bought (and love) the MARAZZI Montagna Dapple Gray 6 in. x 24 in. Porcelain Floor Tile from Home Depot. However, we are having a hard time deciding which direction to run the tile as our bathroom is very long and narrow. I like the look of running the tile long way better, but am afraid it will make the room look even longer. Running it parallel to the tub would help the room look wider, but then will the pieces look choppy? Any advice and opinions would be greatly appreciated!

No brainer for me - long way. Across looks choppy.

First option looks better. Makes the room look bigger.

what ever you end up choosing - you might want to consider using the lighter tones of the tile for choosing a color for your walls and cabinet. The room will appear more spacious.

Thank you for your advice and opinions! Totman Style, we are going with a light paint for the walls (see color scheme attached). Probably going to go with the top color on the paint card. We are very excited!

wonderful. Do the tile whichever looks best to your eye. I would go lengthwise as it is usually done so. great colors for a bath. I would use a white with a touch of the blue. Will give you more spacious feel.

Consider was is outside the bathroom. If tile or wood flooring which was does it run. Staying constant through out home will help with flow. If the bathroom flooring will not affect the other flooring then run it parallel. Good luck!

As usual, I'm running against the grain. I happen to like the short way. I'm assuming that the lighter colors are the current flooring and not part of the finished product.

i think i like it short way but i could be fooled by the missing tiles. before i looked at photo i would have said long way but really it narrows the space.

the main thing for a bathroom like this is a brightly/strongly colored shower curtain, it really brings the far end forward. we have a bath just like this (mirror image) and having a strong shower curtain, and keeping it closed, really brings the room into better proportion.

Second photo...." man in thought"....I think that looks best. ;) I agree with above comments that the first gives a galley feeling narrowing the space.

That being said.... neither will look bad, just preference. :) Nice tiles and color choices. Good luck! :)

Yes, whynottryit, that is the current laminate that is under there. We are doing a complete demo and remodel. The vanity that is there currently is 8 feet long (with one sink!). *photo attached* We are tearing that and the half wall out and replacing them with a shorter vanity with two sinks and a linen cabinet. New tub, new shower tile, new toilet, the works!

I really appreciate all the advice and the comments! I have to say when we started "The Great Floor Debate of 2015" as it has become known as in our house, I was wholeheartedly against running the tile parallel to the tub, while my husband was very against running it long ways. BUT the more I have thought about it, the more I think running it short ways will help widen the room. I may have to concede my original opinion ;-)

I think that's the way to go. I know, hate to have to admit spouse being right but sometimes we have to give them a win. The long way does narrow the space to me and gives it "runway" look. The look on his face though is priceless. He's just so engrossed in trying to figure it out...hehehe

Why bother with 6 x 24 if only one whole tile will show in each row?

    Parallel to tub....

Parallel. The other way looks like a narrow bathroom in a motel.

Long way! Creates a larger sense of space.

I love your color scheme! We just put down the same flooring and LOVE it! We used Benjamin Moore's Revere Pewter paint on the walls for some warmth to tie in with an existing blacksplash but I so wanted to go with a lighter blue and may do so in other rooms.

i had same decision to make but the tile installer did it before he asked me. so we have it long way like galley look now! i guess i will get used to it. but agree with others parallel nicer. i dont like uneven sides although cabinet will be covering most of the righthand side.

    Long way

This post is from 6 years ago, I should hope the floor is finished by now.

The first option is best. I have a similar bathroom as yours: long❣️I like the tiles laid length wise.

Even though this post is 6 years old, it can help others in a similar situation❣️

Haha I’m not sure how this post was found so many years later but we did finish this bathroom and we laid the tiles length wise!

Glad you resolved your issue! Would've been helpful to see the floor without the bath mats. The feature tile in the shower looks like it was more impactful to widening the room than the floor. I think how critical the direction of the floor tile is really depends on how much linear texture is in the tile. Jeff D: as your tile doesn't have a linear pattern, it probably isn't going to catch the eye in nearly the same way.

Just curious, but did you consider laying tiles randomly (vs. the stairstep or "H" pattern)? We're putting in similar tiles in similar sized bathroom, and wondering what to tell installer. For our basement we are using same time, and definitely going random (to minimize stairstep or "H" pattern). Is it less important in a smaller room? Thanks.
