Not quite back

Hi quilt friends! I wish I could say I have found the time to be back with you all, but that's probably not true yet. I do want you to know that I lurk once in a while just to keep up with what's going on here. I haven't even set foot in my sewing room since February, until today! Today I finally started quilting the lap quilt sized Grand Illusion Bonnie Hunter quilt. I didn't get very far but it really felt good to clear enough room in there to get started.

So, here's what has been going on:

Father-in-law Bob (93 years old) was in the hospital in December and found out by the end of January that he really couldn't go back to living on his own. We made a couple trips to Fargo to visit and meet with his doctors in Feb and March. In March we met all the siblings there to clean out his apartment and pack up his belongings. He decided he wanted to move in with us, so we started preparing for that. He was released from rehab in early April and we moved him in. Everything from the guest room was stuffed into my sewing room to make space for his things and the hospital bed. The first 3 weeks were difficult, with multiple falls even tho we had worked with physical therapists to set up the house for him. He ended up in the hospital here and it turns out his falls were due to weakness associated with a chronic infection. We made more changes to the house so accommodate his wheelchair while he spent 5 weeks in rehab. He's been home for 2 weeks and all seems to be going well.

While going through all that, we also had the entire kitchen torn out and renovated along with all the tile throughout the house, a project we started planning and contracting for in January. NOT something I would have done at the same time as moving in an elder, but once it was started we blindly went forward with it. It was finished a week ago and we have almost put everything back where it belongs. We still have the backsplash to do but that's about all that's left.

The last bit of news is that DH Jim is officially unemployed. We aren't sure if we should call it retirement because he's a little too young for social security benefits, but caring for his dad was more than we could manage with both of us working. Just the doctor visits alone took 2 or 3 trips a week. So he's now full time caregiver for his Dad, something I'm sure he will cherish in the years to come, knowing that he could do this.

Some of you will remember that my mom Dorothy lived with us for 7 years before she passed and although there were some struggles, it truly was a gift. Getting to really know your parents as adults is pretty cool. We are hearing stories from Bob that we've never heard and learning things about his life Jim never knew. Now, if I can just figure out how to keep him from destroying my new kitchen cabinets with his wheelchair, life will be good!

Take care, friends! I won't be going to Retreat this year, but I hope to back on the forum more regularly before long.

Kate it is so good to hear from you. I was just thinking of you yesterday and was going to email you. I am sad that you will not be at retreat this year. You make me laugh so much! Jim will cherish his time with his dad. My dad and I did not really get along while I was growing up, but the last 5 years of his life, I stepped in to help him do things that his hands would not let him do and help my mom when he was terminally ill. It was a blessing, because I grew to really appreciate what he had done for us our whole lives.

I am glad your renovations are complete and you can enjoy your new kitchen! Hopefully you will get that quilt done and start on another one. I have mine done but have yet to quilt it. :) We will miss you at retreat, but totally understand. Take care and keep on checking in with us.

Bless you Kate. My mother-in-law lived with us for 9 years, it is a full time commitment. I have no advice for preventing wheel chair damage, we just live with it. Jim may be able to get benefits for being a full time care giver. Check with the Social Security office.

Hi, Kate - I have been thinking of you too! Glad to hear life may be settling down for you now. Make sure Jim gets respite from his caregiver duties. It can be a 24/7 job and he needs to take care of himself, too. There is an organization here called Share the Care that is basically adult day care - check it out. I'm pretty sure it's no cost, or very low cost.

Kate...bless you for caring for your Mom and now your DH's father. You and DH are so generous of heart. I hope things settle down soon and you can do more sewing.

It's great to 'see' you back on the board.

Hi Kate, I have missed you, too, and can understand why you've been MIA from the forum. I've always considered family needs are to be attended to before quilting. But, those needs include time for you and Jim to have your own space and regular date nights, for your own sanity and health. Take care.......

Thanks Sharon. I agree! I think I've just been so overwhelmed by all that's happened since January I didn't even have time to think. Now that it's feeling a bit more settled, I'm ready to take control of my life and my time a little bit. I don't need a lot; just a little. I'll start with the quilting and graduate to date nights!

Kate, it is so good to hear from you again. I wondered if you were traveling with your job or just overwhelmed - now I understand! What a generous thing for you and DH to do to care for his father. I can imagine the challenges. Take care of yourself and check in from time to time!

Wow! When life throws you lemons, you really step up. Hope life continues to smooth out for you. I too had elders live with me for many years. While it's a gift, it can also be a heavy responsibility some days. Take time, even if it means an expensive caregiver, to escape with your husband periodically. You can't get back the years with him later.

Wow, your life has certainly been busy. Glad the renovations are completed... mostly. I bet they look nice. It takes special, unselfish people to be caregivers. Hope you and hubby get a bread every once in a while and that you can enjoy your sewing projects every now and then.
