heating/cooling

Getting ready to build a home in Texas Hill Country. In discussions with our architect, the subject of heating/cooling the home came up. I am under the impression that most homes in this area use a heat pump to serve this purpose. There is no natural gas available. My dilemma is that I have never used a heat pump. Have done a bit of research and understand the mechanical side of it somewhat, but it is an unknown to me and I am a bit uncomfortable. I have the option of using propane to heat via a forced air unit, but do not know if this is the best way to go. Any HVAC pros out there that could clear some of my ignorance? What would be a more efficient route to go. July-Sept. gets hot out there, and winters may drop to the high teens. Thank you in advance.
