and the usual standard is autumn joy, though there are variations on the theme ..

never fert it.. it probably never needs water ...

and it could be broken into about 100 pieces that would probably all live ...

and its an incredible bee magnet ...

In Virginia it blooms in late August/early September.

Cut it to the ground in late winter and new growth will soon appear.

I cut 2/3s off on some of some of mine in June, because if I don't, it flops over just about the time it blooms. Others in a pot with very little water, good drainage, and poor soil, are upright when blooming also.

There are multiple different selections of this type being grown, a picture of one not yet even in flower isn't necessarily adequate to tell which particular kind it is.

Autumn joy is a translation of 'Herbstfreude', which is the cultivar name given the plant by its originator.

Interesting. They all behave about the same though.
