What type of lighting to complement this molding?

My husband and I just purchased an old fixer upper that was full of nice little surprises. One of those was the plaster molding on the bedroom ceiling. I'm used to seeing the lighting hole in the middle, in which case I could picture the lighting that would go there. But I'm having a tough time picturing what would look good in the four corners of this molding. Any ideas? To give you an idea of what the rest of the room looks like, there is a lot of dark wood trim and a fireplace with a green tile (which may or may not stay).

fianou, I like those. Simple enough to have 4 next to each other without looking too busy.

apple, I haven't found any claims to fame for this house. It is around the corner from a house built for the Queen of Spain's ladies in waiting. I'm still looking for a fun fact for our house though.

How much space between each of the 4 corners?

I'd say it's maybe 20-24 inches or so.

Maybe you could hang 4 mini chandeliers. It's in the bedroom right? There would be plenty of room for all 4

You may want to have your electrician check and see if there is an electrical box in place. In our old house the lighting was not up to code and all new boxes had to be installed before I changed the fixtures.

Sandy, thanks for the input. There's a ton of work that needs to go into this house, from plumbing to HVAC (almost all radiators are cracked and need to be replaced!) to electrical. The contractors are working on all that now. Since I'm no good at all of that I've jumped ahead to the decorating :)

I love your house... its got some great features! I would be adding some steampunk fun and going for anything with an old vibe. Pendant lights with edison bulbs or something. Maybe something in copper?

I was surprised when my contractor went to install all of my new/ vintage light fixtures in my 1929 cottage to find the lights were not grounded and we're basically just screwed in to plaster with no electrical box.
What a fun project you have ahead of you. Yes, it's important to fix all of the boring stuff first, then you can start to decorate!

Great house, any historical background?

I agree with starting with an electrician to check the wiring. The electrician may find there's a central junction box that originally had wires coming down the center. If so, the extra sockets can be removed or capped off unobtrusively while the central part can be rewired for a traditional chandelier. If not, I like the idea of pendants or small single-bulb fixtures, both of which require some rewiring.

The bare bulb that's there is probably accurate and appropriate. When electricity was the latest thing, the bare bulb was an important part of the design. The bulbs at the time were very dim and yellow which is nice too. Central fixtures in bedrooms with modern bulbs tend to do little more than cause glare and cast shadows. Not good quality or flattering light. Luckily you can get carbon bulbs again.
