Pinwheels, HST question

Working on this summer weight coverlette using lots of seersucker. My question is about HST. Do you snip off the little points (where the pencil is pointing?) before you sew the HST to form the pinwheel? Or snip after? Or never? Is there really any point in cutting them off or leaving them???

My HST are never exactly the size I need, so I end up trimming them all. Therefore, the points, or ears, are history. I would guess the extra fabric of the ears would make the seams bulkier and an exact 1/4" seam harder to achieve.

I love your HSTs. They are so clean and crisp looking. Are you making the Pinwheels & Prairie Points quilt? I love that pattern.

Yes, Lois...it's at least a variation of that pattern. The one I'm doing will be a full sized cover, tho, so I'm figuring as I go. (I know...Danger, Danger!!)

Thanks for the input. This time, for the HST, i used the method where you stitch all the way around your square, in this case 1 white and 1 stripe - right sides together. then you cut diagonals - corner to corner...you end up with 4 pieces, ready to stitch into the pinwheel. I found it to be an excellent way for more precise sizes...esp when I SLOWED DOWN and made sure my cuts and stitching were a lil more exact!! funny how that works! :)

I always make my HSTs a bit larger than needed and trim. Even if you didn't need to trim, I would cut off the dog ears.
