go for both a coffee table and ottoman. Some storage ottomans have a tray built under the lid so you can flip them as needed. With set of 4 little square ones you can have a big ottoman or flexible extra seating. I like your serene color scheme and would add more of the color from the curtains. But our little black faux leather ottoman takes lots of abuse from snacking and lounging teens.

You have done a fantastic job to date. I like your rug-is classic and gives fabulous texture. I would likely add 2 rectangular ottomans with flip tops for drinks and upholstered in a contemporary fabric with lots of the blue that is in your drapes, and perhaps some pillows in the same fabric. And put the round pouf elsewhere-it take away from the lovely linear lines here.

The rug is nice with it's neutral color and texture. It's hard to tell from the photo, but make sure your rug is evenly placed on the right and left. I'd go for a black coffee table with storage. Black because it will give a more cohesive look with your framed art and the big screen TV. Place some pops of color on the coffee table, and abstract print throw pillows using the pops of color you chose. This is actually a bench, but I'd use it as a coffee table. At Home Decorators Collections and comes in about 6 colors.

I think you are doing great on "cozy and serene" - I prefer a coffee table; the ottomans with trays have people reaching all over each other and fighting for space and always worried that something will topple onto the ottoman, they may work if you have seating surrounding them, but since your seating is linear, I think you need a long, generous coffee table. I think you could get something rectangular, painted black, but then add a nice vase or some other pottery in the color of your curtains. If black seems too strong, and you want to stay light, something in a whitewashed or limed wood would give you a beachy look.

Break up the everything against the wall look and make a conversation area and TV area. Bring in the white/black from the artwork and the aqua in some couch pillows and pottery.

Color, color, color, color, color. The problem with sectionals is they're LARGE so adding another large piece like a huge ottoman might be too intrusive. Add a skinny, colorful, bench-like ottoman. I also liked the comments about 2 smaller coffee tables. Bonus is the person sitting in the middle of the sectional can get out more easily. You have a lot of long, low pieces. I liked the comments also about a colorful chair. Also some tall skinny additions would be nice.

I am seeing a lot of rectangles in your room. I think I would try using something with a different shape, or maybe a series of somethings? Maybe the ceramic garden stool as a table? This would also allow you to add color if you wanted to. Even small round tables would help break up this room of rectangles. It can be handy to have several small tables that can moved around where needed.

Seems like there might be some conflicting styles? The rug gives me traditional but the media stand and black and white are more modern. I'm not a big fan of the blue curtains, they stand out more to me as the odd piece. I think adding to your theme of textures and mixed materials would add dimension. I agree with a couch heighth ottoman and trays with ] sidetables that can also slide under the couch.

Love what you have done with the room except for the rug. Feel it is too bulky and textured. Not a big fan of rugs on carpet. But I do feel in this instance a rug is needed as the color of the carpet and couch seem very similar. A smaller rug with a pop of color to match the beautiful curtains (and no texture) is my suggestion. And a simple elegant coffee table. Feel ottoman would be too heavy and bulky for the small space.

Ditch the rug, it's not really improving the overall feel of the room and as another post indicated, it fights with the more modern feel of the other pieces. I would suggest a coffee table as you already have a large upholstered piece. A modern wooden piece would add texture and warmth. You need some color as the only hint we can see are the curtains. I think I might swap them out. Also, it's quite beige-y, beige couch, walls, rug - easiest fix is to paint. Also there are the two white pieces - so the room needs more white to pull it together - like a large white tray on the wooden coffee table. And some texture - everything is solid. Show us what the room opens up to...

The rug and the chandelier play off of each other very nicely. The rug also softens the room. I must say, that I would never think of that rug as traditional as others have implied. The room has a very European feel to it. Contemporary design isn't all hard cold lines and strong clashing colors.

I love the rug and it would be a shame to hide such a beautiful item - which is a real feature in the room. I would go for a very solid glass coffee table that adds the functionality but doesn't cover up the texture of the rug below.

Consider a pair of sturdy low square wood tables AND a pair of foam filled square cushions that could be used as either throw pillows for the sofa or added to the tables when you want to use either table as an ottoman -- maybe even three each for when you and your SO are enjoying the sofa and want a table, too. I'd recommend tables that provide storage as well -- drawers or the top lifts or door to open.

The rug is attractive but makes the color scheme a bit monochromatic as well as having a design that still seems a bit "busy". It also appears to be very thick at the edge and, therefore, a potential trip hazard. For myself, I prefer bare floors except for winter when I am more inclined to welcome the "warm" look of a somewhat darker rug.

If it's a room you use to watch TV (and it looks like it is or will be), then you might want to go with a cocktail ottoman and put a large tray on it for drinks, books, etc. See what I did below. My fiancee loves that he can put his feet up on the ottoman while watching TV....you can slide the tray back more if you need more "foot space". You can get a very large tray (as shown here) at Z Gallerie. Hope that helps :)

Ive grown to dislike coffee tables, I'm all for ottomans now bc most people want to put their feet up. You can easily put a tray on it for drinks and then remove the tray to create a nice cozy pit group for watching movies.

I am changing the rug and thinking of putting a distressed aluminum trunk...what you guys think?

Don't change the rug because what other people say.....it's a neutral rug, so it doesn't hurt the look at all. Change it if YOU prefer more color or pattern. An aluminum trunk (if its the right size) would be cute in that space. You'll get a lot of different points of view on this forum.....but your room has nothing glaringly wrong with it. From you artwork and ceiling light, it looks like you have fun, eclectic style..... stay with it! :)

If the corner where the plant was is empty, why not a comfy chair in the colors of the couch AND the drapes? I'd like some more color in the room. Plus a glass coffee table.

Although I'm not a big fan of area rugs on top of carpet, I like the way the texture of this rug adds interest and texture to your space. I love everything about your room. I like your sectional, love your prints on both the walls, love the console table and love the chandelier. You have done an amazing job of putting pieces together that simply work! Here are some tables that I think would look nice in your space. I think an oval/round shape would work nicely and would provide the room with a nice balance of shapes as someone suggested.

I love your rug, even though I'm not a huge fan of rugs on top of carpet. I really like your overall style and the eclectic look of the room. I am partial to cocktail ottomans for rooms that people lounge in, but you would need to find one in a subtly contrasting fabric - maybe a small cream and black print, tufted top, with a round tray on top for people to set drinks. You would probably have to special order one but that's no problem. If you don't go with a cocktail ottoman, I would go with a round glass and metal table like the ones that are pictured directly above my post. This would LOOK great but wouldn't be as comfortable a spot to prop your feet up while you're watching TV.

The only thing I would change about the room is the blue curtains. You have a very soft, luscious, neutral thing going on, which looks great. I would focus on TEXTURE rather than COLOR because you already have so many fantastic textures going on in the room. I would keep it neutral - I think the blue is jarring rather than peaceful.

I'd find a really interesting chair for that corner - maybe something with wooden arms and legs but an upholstered back and seat. Or one of those really cool Lucite chairs. Something striking. That's a very visible corner and you need something with great texture and style there -NOT another upholstered piece in my opinion.

If you're going to keep those curtains, I'd definitely pull that blue in with pillows and upholstery on whatever you put in that corner - and possibly change out the art above the sofa with something that has some color to it.

I actually prefer the room with the rug, without the blue curtains, and with a more elegant ottoman or coffee table, but the author says they want the blue curtains and have removed the rug. I think the more elegant choice would be to remain in the neutral family and keep the rug and lose the curtains, but since they're keeping the curtains, that takes the elegance factor down a notch or so and allows for more color and more casual stuff to be introduced into the room. That's my opinion anyway.

The blue curtains add much needed color to the room, you don't want the whole room to be all one color it will be blah. The rug adds texture. Some throw pillows to match the curtains & an ottoman or table is all you need.

That is a beautiful rug, although it does dominate the room! It is slightly larger than you would need for that space.

Don't change it out if you like it though. It's hard to see how well it matches the rest of the furniture with the lighting in the photo, but if you are happy with that the only thing left to do is get a coffee table! Keep your guest's drinks off that brand new rug!

Since you have a lot of black and white art, you could try to match that.

Most of these are pretty "out-there" so I'd be glad to post some more suggestions in a different direction or color if you'd like.

Hanna Ta, since you are not crazy about placing a rug on top of carpet, why not just find a small, irregular rug that will add texture to layer on top of the carpet and for underneath you new trunk?

Hannah, while you've been getting plenty of advice on your decor, I would like to say that no plant can survive when chucked into that dark corner. I'm sorry but that palm tree will start to die or grow extremely slow (a plant that doesn't grow is a plant that is dying - plants can't regenerate).

I would suggest placing your guitar stand in that corner for a more practical layout.

In fact I believe that there is more light received where the guitar is placed than that dark dingy corner. It's quite surprising to note that sunlight through glass loses around about less than half the micromoles (the amount of useful light for the plants to photosynthesise) than direct sunlight. About 3 feet from the windows you'd almost have close to 0 micromoles.

Sounds like you have to keep the rug - but it's a serious tripping hazard as is now. You'll need to do some artful and careful placing of furniture to help people avoid tripping over the thick edge. Consider moving the furniture around so they're not hugging the walls on both sides as you've done now. Is the TV really going to stay there? And you need something larger than the small ottoman you have there now, unless you get two of them and place side by side with trays on top. A larger coffee table would be fine.
