Siding to make a giant SQUARE look like a home?

Just bought this house in the cutest walking neighborhood - and it's a CUBE!!! The front deck is coming off and, if the city will let us, we'll add a covered porch. We need to replace the siding - I'd love to change the color - and maybe even the king of siding! What can I do to make this a little less...SQUARE?! Definitely take of the shutters, right? Add some shaker shingles somewhere? Bigger swaths of siding? Smaller siding? YIKES!

What an adorable house! I'm sure a covered porch will go a long way to breaking up the cube effect.

It's super cute! Love your little house! Doesn't look like it's a cube though... Don't worry it looks nice. If you want to change something it would be the color of the deck and door: paint them in white. But that's really an option.

Thanks, guys! Maybe I took to good a photo - the front deck is actually condemned! and the siding is VERY faded and splotchy and loose in places. It's awful-looking in person! But I think the adirondack chairs add a little something of the time-being :) I really want to change the color and add some trim - but I'm not sure if we should do all one color or even a couple of different textures. Maybe shakes on top and horizontal siding on the bottom? And what's up with Hardy board?! AAAH!

The photo didn't come through too well, but I think you have a good idea about using two different materials in two different colors. This photo is from Houzz, under "traditional exterior". I'm sure you can find it. It gives a good look.

Once you've sorted out the deck/porch configuration, landscaping will go a long way. Something as simple as a tall shrub or tree at each corner will soften the look. Use them to "hide" the actual corners of the house, visually, but make sure you plant them far enough out so when they grow to full size they're not crowding the building.

You can add a front porch that goes all the way across with a slightly sloping roof.

add the porch end to end across the front. re use the plants in front for new landscape. remove the lower shutters, and increase the scale of the uppers.

no i dont think you need to spend on that, when the cost of the porch. up size the shutters maybe go dark gray rather than black. I'm telling the porch and shutters..........that's cost enough lol.

If you have extra money to spend you could add shake siding. Your home looks like a classic salt box.

You say it is a cube. A saltbox drops to 1 story in the back so has a slanted roof. Look at James Hardie for siding and definitely a porch and landscaping will take away the squareness.
