Edit: Just looked it up... do an image search for the tobacco hornworm pupa. Odds are that the tomato hornworm is similar.

It's the pupal case of a hornworm. To determine which one, put it in a covered jar (toweling secured with a rubber band) and set it somewhere you'll see it daily, but NOT in the sun.

After the adult emerges, post its picture.

That extra long curly proboscis looks more like Agrius cingulata, the Pink Spotted hornworm, than any other of the hornworms. Were you, by any chance, digging sweet potatoes?

Look up pupae of Sphinx Moths. It is one of those and could be anything from a Carolina Sphinx to the Hummingbird Moth.
