Tomato experiment + Hardening off Problem!

I received a supply of excess seed to try for next season. But I wanted to have a test run this year. Started the seed 6-23 under 4' shoplights. by 7-24 they were 8-9" and looking very healthy. knowing that Im hurting for time this season they need to get in the ground soon. But I did take a week of hardening off leaving them out on a covered porch at the end and in all afternoon sun on the last day and they stood up well . So I put these plants in the ground. We were in a heat wave here 90+ temps F. Now the plants are reacting to that heat, and even changes at night into the 60s. So the question is did I not fully harden them off after all? This morning after a low of 66 they are on the ground.. But I had left them out all night several nights in the hardening off process. I am a little confused on the signals sent to me by the plants.
