Zinnias - Need advice,please.

I started Thumbelina, Lilliput, and Cactus Zinnias under lights from seed. They were started in the Jiffy Seed Starting Pellets. We live in Zone 6. Our weather has been very overcast and rainy through June and July. The seedlings were transplanted into pots and window boxes using MiracleGro Potting Soil. To my disappointment, all three varieties grew extremely tall and leggy. The Alyssum plants also did not remain compact. Was there too much fertilizer in the soil or too little sun? The pots were well-drained. The only Zinnia Seeds I found locally were the Fredonia Brand. Could someone help me decide why this happened? I would like to dry the seeds but don't want to use them if they were not of good quality.

Thanks for all help, Genie
