JM help!

Okay guys, I am new to this forum, but boy am I glad I found it. I've spent the last hour reading over old posts, and I have come to the conclusion that I have found my kind of people, haha. So I have been bitten very hard by the JM bug, and have been searching like mad for the past two months for any and all info I could obtain on JM's. After reading up, I feel as though it is time to finally purchase my first JM, but being a broke 20 year old college student and all, I am not sure what route to take as they are pretty pricey in general. Also, I can't make up my mind on which cultivar to purchase first. I would really prefer a green leaved mounding variety to start with. I reside in East Tennessee, so I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good nursery. I would prefer to get one from a nursery before I got one via mail order. Thanks so much guys and sorry for all the rambling!

Welcome, Kyle! You'll find these little trees can be pretty addictive :-) For local selections, check out MrMaple in Knoxville but I'm sure there are other sources around. And any day is a good day to do a road trip to various area nurseries to see what's on offer.

Thank you gardengal! I have heard of MrMaple before, but I was unsure if it was strictly a mail order nursery or not. Could you clear that up for me?

It is primarily a mail order nursery but their tree farm (in E. Flatrock, NC) is open by appointment and they will sell direct to the public from there. The link I attached will give you all the info.

Thank you so much for all the info bub. You basically answered all the questions I've asked and the ones I intended to ask, haha. I live in Cocke County. I have checked out MrMaple's website a few times now, but have yet to really sit down and look at everything. And I actually made an account with conifer kingdom less than an hour ago. I, as everyone else I'm sure, would really like to find some decent deals on bigger trees. They're just usually so dang expensive. I like the looks of both sites, and since you and others have recommended both, I'm sure they are top-notch places. I have heard of the topiary-gardens place, but have yet to check them out. Also, I'm so glad you touched on the Ebay thing. Just out of curiously, I checked on Ebay a few weeks ago and saw there are many, many JM for sale, but I had no clue on how reliable a source it would be. I will definitely check out the sellers you mentioned. Thanks again.

I placed my first order with eBay member acer1987 last week. They have a lot of cultivars that are smaller but the prices are good. I will let you know about the quality of the tree when it arrives.

I appreciate it. I'm assuming you have quite a few Japanese Maples?

I have 29. My wife thinks that's a lot but there is a guy in one of the Facebook groups I joined that planted his 365th JM today. I consider that a large collection. I still plan to buy a lot more and will probably have 100 when I'm finished.

Geez, that's awesome. I'm very jealous of both of you. I do not have Facebook anymore, but are there any other groups or communities you could recommend I join?

I got bit hard by the JM bug this year too, I bought and planted five around the house this year. Now I'm starting to dive into conifers a bit, haha.

I appreciate it Chris. This a strange coincidence, but I was just looking at a post you made in conifers not too long ago. It was the one where you asked what kind of conifer it was in the pictures you posted. Whatever it was/is, I too find it very interesting. Anything with a pendulous, asymmetrical shape such as many JM, and Live Oaks, and whatever type of conifer that was just really grab my attention.

This forum and the UBC forum are the best I've found for information. The FB groups are more for cool photos of maple cultivars.
