How to arrange furniture, I'm not good at this thanks!

We are moving into this home we just bought, it's not our furniture. I'm having trouble figuring out how to arrange furniture and what is needed because of the fireplace and stairs. We are painting the walls/fireplace and fixing the floors, removing the carpet on stairs. Thanks any and all help is needed!

    Three ways you can go:

    #1

--Get a very low media console for your TV and place it to the left or right of the window. (Alternatively, have a low window benches built to flank the window. Place the TV on or above one. Add an upholstered cushion on the other for extra seating.

--Float the sofa so that it faces the TV and still leaves room on the left for the stairs. Get a second upholstered chair and have both of them facing the sofa with your coffee table in the middle.

    #2

--Build/buy floor to ceiling storage shelves to surround the window and place the TV on a shelf to the left. Same layout as above.

    #3

--Low media shelf under the right window with TV above, sofa directly facing it with coffee table in front.

--Place two upholstered chairs with a small, round table in the middle facing the far wall.

--In this configuration, find two complementary rugs to define each space--one at the far end of the room and one for the chairs and table.

Hi. Beautiful new home! Assuming you want a tv in the room, I would

-place a sofa where the sofa in the photo is. But, it should be straght, not angled. You could also consider a modular sectional with a chaise on the window wall side.

-place the tv on a low console under the high window

-if space allows, you may be able to fit a couple of small chairs on either side of the tv. (depending on traffic flow, you could consider one chair on the opposite side of the fireplace, which would make the fireplace feel more included in your seating area)

-there is an opportunity for a second seating area on the opposite end of the room (would need more photos to comment on that).

You do not state what style you are seeking, but the room could be beautiful!

    something like this........

If you are interested, send me dimensions of the room and I will do a floor plan for you. Let me know what furniture needs to be placed in the room, or if you are getting all new.

--Build attractive bookcases to surround the window on the far wall. If the budget is tight, there are some great Ikea hacks that show how you can use their basic bookcases and enhance them.

--With no TV in the room, float the sofa so that it faces the far wall. Place a console table behind the back of the sofa. Line up the edge of the console table with the corner of the fireplace wall.

--Place a couple upholstered easy chairs--maybe one of them a chaise facing the sofa in easy reach of a coffee table directly in front of the fireplace. Add an interesting reading lamp in front of the bookcases and in easy reach of a coffee table in front of the sofa.

Anchor this conversation group with a rug.

Thanks for the information about the tv. What do you see as the function of this room and how important is the fireplace to you?

Thanks everyone! The fireplace is very important. We will have a tv and playroom in the basement so that will be the family room. We have a toddler so it won't be a formal living room. Just a place to relax and enjoy fires in the winter. It's off the foyer so the first room you see when you enter. When we have company over it will be where we entertain. A small den is off of it which will most likely have some toys and a dining room off the other side

Hi. Thanks for the information about the importance of the fireplace. There is not much space in the entrance area and I see that is a high traffic area.

With the fireplace important, you'll want your configuration similar to what Housegal mentioned. Ideas:

If you want more modern look, sectional with one leg along the stairs (facing fireplace) and one leg facing the long back wall. This will "form" your living space, traffic flowing behind the sectional. On the long back wall, you will need something tall on either side of the window. I could be bookcases or simply art. A couple of more chairs could be placed where the tv is shown in the photo.

Alternatives to the above are with a sofa and a couple of chairs. The sofa could be floated to face the fireplace, with chairs on sides. or sofa could face the back wall, with chairs along the back wall side.

Finally, you could place a seating group around the fireplace and add a game table to the area in front of the back window. I personally think this is the best use of the space and the general idea shown in the first photo below. This leaves the room cozy, but with an open feel and gives you 2 separate venues. I would place a bookcase where the piano is shown and a couple of comfy chairs and a table in front of the tall window.

Photos are inspiration for you. I don't know your decorating style.
