Hardwood Floors with Kids

Hi,

We are going for a new build home. We are family of 4 with 2 kids (4 & 2). We are unable to decide on what flooring we need to choose. Many said Tiles are better for kids over hardwood.

We want to decide whether hardwood floors are really a bad decision over tiles? We are looking at hardwood look tiles too but the builder carrying them is expensive than hardwood and not so great collection.

Please suggest with little kids hardwood floors is a bad decision over long term?

I have had hardwood floors all my life, with kids, dogs and cats (not at the same time, though!). I have had no problems, and it really brings so much more warmth to a room than tile. So I say go for it! If there should be some dents or scratches, it is easy to sand it down, too!

I have hardwood floors throughout and would not consider another type of flooring. Tiles are good, but I cringe at dirty grout wherever I go. Besides, even though tiles are very resistant, if you drop something very heavy you can break it, while the hardwood won't have more than a dent or scratch that can be desguised with inexpensive products.

We keep a large area rug in the playroom and my daughter knows that no toy (especially Legos) can go out of that rug.

I have hard wood floors that have survived 2 boys growing up and multiple indoor large dogs. I love my floors and the dings they show from a life well loved and lived. Fond memories of the boys and dogs sock chases around the house. They are warm and welcoming and can always be refinished if someone wants that perfect, non-scratched surface. They don't generally show dirt either.

Hardwood for sure. Tiles are cold and hard. I love my hardwood. I have tile in my entryway and like it for that application but I would never even consider it for my living area.

I could have written summerca's comment. It captures my love of our hardwood floors, two boys and many dogs over the years. Just don't go a dark stain, as I hear those show EVERYTHING.

We have hardwood floors and two kids, 4 & 1.5. The only thing I'd add to the above comments is that hardwood is more forgiving of falls than tiles, too, which is a good thing for kids with more enthusiasm than coordination!

You have upkeep with hardwood but in the long run worth the effort.
