Technically, ALL alliums are edible but those grown for ornamental purposes tend not to develop a significant bulb OR they are not very tasty. And much too expensive to eat compared to a common onion (Allium cepa).

You can get homegrown onions that you can afford to actually eat by planting sets from the nursery, feed store, or hardware store.
