The top and bottom are exposed. Most wall sconces are exposed at the top or bottom, or both to allow for ventilation. Very few models are covered both at the top and bottom, so you'll be limited in the designs you find. I recommend going with the design that best matches your home decor without worrying about the top or bottom cover as they are rarely ever seen!
