The fireplace is between the great room area and the kitchen area. the ceiling height changes from 18 ft in the great room to 9 ft in the kitchen. We had it framed with two sided shelf space on the left of the firebox and a cantilevered mantle to the right. I don't know how far up to extend the tile around the fireplace on the great room side with the tall ceiling.
