Consider going with light carpet and light paint to balance with the dark ceilings.

What are you planning to do with all the built in cabinets? The furniture?

Do you use the baseboard heat?

I definitely think you should do wood floors lighter than the ceiling for contrasf. I think cream for the walls to keep things warm and light.

We will do the whole room renovation and all furnitures will be replaced.

The baseboard heat will stay.

If you want the room lighter & brighter & updated, you have to address the ceiling. A whitewash would help and the room would still be cozy. Once that is decided then all the other colors will fall into place.

yes a light wood floor would be the only choice here. and then maybe darken the hutch.

and take the yellow glass out of the hutch and maybe add seedy or water glass.

I'm not convinced the wall area is real dimensional wood. Those walls may be simply peel and stick veneer that was popular in the 60's. The ceiling looks to be actual planks. Can you identify the wood? What area of the country is the home located

This room hasn't been addressed since the 60s and the current furnishings, I'm afraid are of no real value.

I LOVE the ceiling and accent wall! Don't touch them! I agree with everyone else, go lighter on the floor and walls, but that ceiling is gorgeous!

You're right. The wall is stick veneer and the ceiling is wood plank. The house is in the Northeast.

I would suggest going with a lighter or natural engineered flooring with a low sheen/satin finish. I would also go with a lighter/fresher (Off white, beige, light grey etc.) paint color for the walls to brighten the space if you're keeping the wood plank ceiling. I think it would compliment your ceiling and corner wall next to the stairs. I wouldn't go as dark, couple shades lighter with a slight reddish hue similar to your ceiling.

I'm not a fan of the white wash with the red based ceiling. You're going to get a colour clash of momentous proportions. I would love to see a hickory floor here. The overall look is light...but the darker striations would certainly help tie-in the dark ceilings.

Here's a thought...the wood ceilings may have darkened due to the finish used at the time (oil based finishes = dark orange over time). I wonder if you could strip the ceiling and then reapply a "clear coat" (no dark amber effect) onto the wood. This would keep the exposed wood while lightening the overall appearance by 2-3 steps.

This would make all the difference in this room.
