As for the table runner, it doesn't look that bad, does it? And it's practical. It's not a perfect magazine ready picture but good for everyday use.

We don't really into plastic chairs and bright color is a big no for my hubby though I don't mind some pop color. Ant chairs look modern but it has similar feeling with our old ikea chairs which my hubby doesn't like. White chair could be pretty but may not practical as dining chairs.

I like all of your 3 choices and for the winter, if your husband gets his chair choice, you could add cushions (you could upholster them in a cute faux fur). It really depends on your budget, but I would also test them all to see how study and comfortable they feel. I'm from Montreal originally and there used to be so many independent furniture stores, but perhaps they are too expensive. Have you tried Home Sense?

Jesse, I like the 3 you have chosen above. Please take this suggestion from someone who has tried/ordered several styles of chairs on-line....the quality is really important. I tired several less expensive chairs and they didn't work with my table. You could end up having the same issue and need to find a really good quality chair that may cost more but will work with your beautiful table. My suggestion would be to wait and keep the chairs you have until it's in your budget to spend the money on good quality chairs. Your home is lovely. Good luck.

if you're still considering options, maybe a good compromise is something with both upholstery and metal? Here are a few examples of styles that have both....all of these are from Elte.com (a store I wish we had here in the U.S. ;-)). These may be more than you're comfortable spending budget wise, but are just ideas of styles that could offer a little bit of both to you and hubby.

either way, I think whatever you ultimately end up with should have some upholstery on it....just more of a warm feel IMO and more comfy to sit on for those longer, lingering-type of dinner parties or just for lounging around the table with family/friends. :-)

Karen, you are right. I cannot test the chair quality because I can only order online except the middle one from IKEA. It's my concern too, always end up by spending more money when I try to save and buy less expensive ones.

Home sense is one of my favorite store, I would check it out and check around other local furniture stores to see if there are better options, but local cool stores are never cheap, it's very common price it for $300-600 each. My budget would be around $200 each.

I think any all wood chair looks cheap and is too small for the heft of your table. Not that I do not think they are wonderful in certain applications with miles of glass and steel and a thin linear table but I really think they look undersized and light weight.

I would do upholstered in a color that blend with what you have, greige linen or wool possibly?

Have dinner in one of those aluminum metal chairs; horrible comfort level and in the winter cold comfot level. You would only have to put a cushion on it. But I think if you did upholstery then buy a pair of the metal chairs to put somewhere in Dining Room for extra chairs that look cool!

Jessie, I loved many of the chairs that I considered, but when I ordered them, they were not "meaty" or not "beefy" enough for my table.

If you decide to order on-line, make sure you have the option to send back if the chair doesn't work. Unfortunately, there is a lot of trial and error involved when you purchase a table and chairs from different places, but in the end, I'm sure it will look amazing.

Soosun2's comment about metal chair does raise my conern, comfortable level is important because we do like to seat there talking when friends come.

Eames chair is classic and our company's reference room has them. I am not sure about the plastic seat, feels immature to me. I do not like faux leather either. Real leather might be good but price would be too high.

Elte chairs are way out of our price range, I do like the first one though.

I will check IKEA after work today to see the NILS chair. They are cheaper and versatile but I wonder the cover won't look so smooth and have winkles. Anyway, I will check it out soon!

We're in IKEA now, NILS chair is out. slipcover never really tightly fit, I don't think it look nice with loose winkles. Surprisingly, we like this one, real leather, just a bit small.

I think a high back Seagrass Chair would look good and may be a bit more comfortable?

Sea grass feels natural but we are not really into the look.

We checked local stores on Sunday, we are lost after trying a lot chairs, either the style, or the price, or the size, or the comfort level, there are always something not right for us. We cannot decide or let's say we don't really love them.

My hubby doesn't mind to shop with me but it will drive him crazy if I change idea after buying something. He hates I make him redo something we already done, so, I cannot just buy and see how it looks at home but make a decision and stick to it.

The searching is still on but we want to relax and wait until find things we both love. We want something affordable, but not cheap looking, not too formal, has some casual feeling, a bit sleek, and still warm and comfortable. OK, I know, we are too difficult, LOL.

Anne, we did check Structube on St. Denis which doesn't have all these chairs on the websites, for the chairs in the stores, mostly are made of faux leather which I don't like.

We have an office chair which made of faux leather, the frame is very sturdy and great to sit on, but with time and our cat(not any more) scratching there, the surface really peeled off like crazy.

Kind of like this one, but didn't see it in store.

I agree with Karen Dumont, upholstered yellow chairs with wood legs would look better.

I was looking through the latest House & Home magazine and came across a photo with some great West Elm chairs. They were expensive but when I went on line, they have the one below on sale - regular $250 for $199 (works with your budget) in a basketweave fabric, comes in a few colors and you can request swatches. The nice thing about these, is that they have arms which should make them even more comfortable -if you call a local West Elm, they could tell you which location has some, so you could test them out but at $199 they have to be ordered on line. This is where you cross shop. See the expensive chair, note its details then plug in design style and see what variety you come up with. Someone else will be making this in a cheaper version. Maybe polyester instead of linen or pleather instead of leather. But a cheaper version is out there.

I don't mind the style of the chair. Did you take a seat to see if it was comfy ? I'm not too crazy about the pattern and definitely not the nail heads . that's a personal opinion

The chairs have decent size and soft, it's comfortable but a bit high for me. My feet won't touch the ground if I seat deeply in the chair. Pattern might hide the stain in my mind, but the style sort of old fashioned, not sure about it.

So far, I might more the ikea leather chairs prefer, but still like some fabric upholstered options. I will take time to think it over.

If we bought this style, which color would fit more? I like the blue, hubby perfer the dark brown.

Surprisingly, I found out West elm Canada store has different price with their website( mostly cheaper), probably because Canadian dollar lose the value so that website changes price according to exchange rate but local store do not change price all the time.

Thanks very much for everyone's help here, I would like to update the dining situation: I didn't buy any chairs but changes happened around it.

As everyone strongly suggested, I removed the mirror and added a small version living wall upstairs, hopefully, it will cover the whole height of the wall with time:

Then, we put a huge wall mural in living room. Because it's an open space, it almost takes space off the dining space, or connects the dining and living space together.

The reason to put on a wall mural is we installed the projector screen in the corner so that there is no space to hang any arts(it will block the screen when we watch movie), and there are outlets right in the middle of the wall, we just have to get something to cover it.

After taking the picture, I feel like the media unit is blocking the wall mural, but we do need something to put on the sound bar, so, we moved the small wood bench(we used it as coffee table) there:

We are not sure if it's the final solution yet, we either buy another media unit or buy a new coffee table.

As for the chairs... still not sure, we are trying to get things we are sure about first and then decide the rest. Anyway, the current chairs are still serve the function, we will take our time.

So, do you think the bench works as media unit?

Another question, do you think it's better with a area rug in living space or without rug to separate living space would make the room feel bigger?

We have these modern Windsor style from Crate and Barrel. High backed, comfortable for lingering after desert, and beautiful in the dining room. IKEA makes lower backed ones in black.

Love your living wall! Using a bench as a media console is great idea, the electronic devices are much better looking now and don't require to be hidden away in a closed cabinet. Your mural is an elegant solution to your overlapping problem between art and screen. You both have excellent design smarts, please keep us informed as you go on!

mtr1mtr2, the clean lines do make the chair have modern vibe. We are debating if we want to seat on something soft( upholstered chairs), or all wood chair for easy maintain and long lasting, or go completely modern( ghost chair or metal), so many choices...

While others' suggestions for alternatives to these chairs are good, if these chairs are really what meets your budget, I'd stick with them. I'd try to integrate these modern chairs into the otherwise rustic decor, by getting some modernity into the rest of the space. For instance, a chrome bowl on the table (which will also reflect the upper storey's light a bit).

(I do agree that that mirror is really not doing you any favours there.)

Yes, other chair options they gave here are great, we made our choice according to our budget and life style, the ikea Bernard chair is durable, comfortable and affordable, and I do like the look too. So, it fits for us now, but I do love other options they gave hereand appreciate the opinion a lot!
