Thanks. Do you mean remove the tile above the mantel and install drywall? And paint the remaining tile? What color? We were thinking we had to reface, but painting has crossed our minds as well.

i think that stacked stone will look as off in 10-15 years as the current fireplace does.

I would definitely demo the slate, but you probably won't be able to save what's underneath. I'm guessing it's brick. Then I'd probably just drywall or stucco the thing.
