Putting a hot pot on marble can change the color. Don't do it!

Mixing marble and granite counters in the same kitchen is a No-No - If you're going to mix materials, consider Concrete, Butcherblock, Solid surfacing or metal instead.

Many people do use marble for their countertops but in reality it is not as durable as granite, marbles are very pourus and you have taken the "protective barrier" off the marble by honing it, If you really want to use it make sure you seal it with an "Impregnator Sealant" normally sold at Stone Companies, not big box stores. FYI you can crack any natural stone by placing a hot pot directly on it. Stone is cool and placing the extreme on it should not be a habit. I have lived with stone for 18 years and wouldn't think about putting a hot pot directly on the counter tops.

I have honed white cararra marble. Lots of it & I love it! Shiny black would be a disaster, but if it is honed & light in color, the etching from a lemon is not seen. I have had it for 4 years & I cook A LOT, and I rarely seal it. Shiny marble in a kitchen is bad. Light bounces, it looks cold, dated and scratches WILLbe quite noticeable & therefor, regrettable.

Our culture wants things to look like new. There are marble tops being used in kitchens in Europe that have been there for hundreds of years. They will stain, can crack and wear down but with reasonable care they will outlive all of us. Seal the top appropriately. If you are concerned about the inevitable "aging" use a quartz top material that looks like marble. There are several available. Ceasarstone has one called Misty Carrera and there are others.

Oh, I would never put a hot pan on any counter, as well...

NOT a good idea, Marble stains easily and even when properly sealed is not recommended for kitchen counter tops. Granite is really the best alternative, some of its not expensive and its very durable.

I Love the marble, but it is more pourous then Granite..I would love to know how it holds up...

what about quartzite? Anyone know how this compares and whether it should be a honed finish. Found a beautiful piece.
