Living room furniture layout question

We have an open floor plan with one big kitchen eating area and living room. I'm perplexed as to how to arrange the furniture in our living room as it has an alcove that is mostly unused. I'd love to look for a spot to hide all the kid crap. Unfortunately we won't be getting new couches until my kids are out of the color on the couches and spilled stuff all over them stage. I just don't know how to lay out the furniture and my husband suggested this way but I just don't like it. The other arrangement we have used has been with the couches parallel to each other facing the coffee table with the coffee table in front of the fireplace. Any other thoughts and suggestions are appreciated. We are also looking to paint the living room a cool gray color sometime this fall.

How about a console cabinet against the sofa to the left of the fireplace? Toys could be stored in there when not in use.

As you are probably aware your furniture does not fit your current space, I'm assuming you had it before you moved in and I understand it needs to stay for now.
The way the couches are positioned currently, doesn't give you a very good flow for conversation. Have you tried pulling all of your furniture in for a closer grouping?
Next furniture purchase, make sure you have all of your room measurements with you. Smaller pieces with smaller arms will give you more options.

Considering the furniture you're working with, I think the arrangement works quite well. What is it you don't like about it? Due to its size, you're a bit limited as to options. You could replace the shelving unit under your gallery wall with something with doors for storage and add a cabinet like the one below where the table is to the right of your fireplace for more storage. It comes in a variety of cool colors. You could paint the glass doors with glass frosting spray to make them more opaque to hide what's behind them.

Sandy, yes the couches were bought before the house...I can't wait to upgrade but my kids are 3 and 6 so there is no hope of keeping anything clean! Thanks for the input.

I think the couches facing each other would be a better flow and better use of space, but pull the couch on the left closer in, so you can take advantage of the space behind as a play/storage area for the kids and toys will be better hidden and they may love their own space. Place the chair facing the tv and move the secretary to the right corner.
